Chapter I: Vampires & Demons
Vampires are known to be used by certain and private organizations to hunt demonic presences or curses born from human greed. In most cases, these organizations take young youth from clans and train them to smell, track, hunt, and kill like dogs.
It is truly disgusting.
I walk through Tokyo’s busy streets, watching the colorful lights, flashing screens, and pedestrians pass by me. This place is much more different than home. It will be hard to get used to. Much like Japan, America has also started these organizations.
Home, back in Dallas, they’re more wicked than they are here, or so I hear from the rumors everyone tells. Japan is mostly peaceful.
Because of humans- vampires and demons will never rekindle peace. Now they’re in a constant state of war with one another no matter the location. As close as vampires are to demons in nature, demons have declared the entire race of vampires traitors.
It is most unfortunate that half breeds such as myself are targeted more and more. Because of these wars, we are an easy target for new hunters and vampires alike. I have no vampire blood in me, but I have human...and I have demon.
Father’s blood runs strongly through me, and I wished it hadn’t. I would be a normal girl, not running away like this. I am always scared that I will die every second. A walk amongst humans is dangerous. Where there are humans, there are hunters, and because of that, I am scared of being a normal citizen.
It is best to be careful and not let any of my cursed energy out at any given time. Vampires can easily locate this energy if I am not careful, but cursed energy- our magic is also our way to protect ourselves.
One wrong mistake can get me killed. I know this, and yet...
I stop in my tracks, clenching my fists. I hear one of them...my senses are not as high as a full-blooded demon or a vampire, but... they’re so close to me. And they’re not afraid to be heard. They’re powerful and alsodeadly. I know this by judging only their footsteps.
I am being followed...I haven’t even done anything to alert them of my presence. The only thing I have done was go to the supermarket...I just needed pads- being a half-blood didn’t prevent me from getting my monthly blood, and in all due respect, it has made it worse than a regular human’s.
They must be a vampire. This person...I can almost smell the blood they recently consumed from their sweat.
A lump forms in my throat, my claws starting to sink into my palm from fear as I bite my lip.
Ah, this is no good, no good at all!
I grab my arm to stop shaking and leaking some of my cursed energy, and they get closer and closer.
I am scared! I do not wish to fight. I just wanted to be a normal civilian!
But before I can lash out using my claws, they bypass me making my eyes widen as a tall white-haired man slings his arm around a woman and smiles not far away from me, “I didn’t make you wait too long for me right?”
The beautiful woman giggles with long and curly brown hair. “Of course not...You’re right on time.”
I feel relief wash over me as I avert my eyes from him, and I sigh softly.
So he didn’t notice me...
That man or...vampire is strange. He wears a long black trench coat and sunglasses even though it is evening, nearly dark. I know light bothered their eyes, but to this extreme, I never heard of it before.
Just when I think I am safe since he starts walking away with the beautiful woman he refuses to let go of, he stops and turns, making me freeze again. He lowers his head, and his sunglasses slide down his nose, exposing light blue and crystal eyes. They’re beautiful just as they’re eerie.
This man was a killer.
He speaks in Japanese still, but luckily I understand the language, “Missy...”
I tense, waiting for the next words to spill out of his mouth as we lock eyes.
So he did notice.
He grins, “You dropped something.” His eyes travel to the ground, and my eyes follow to see the plastic bag I dropped, exposing the sanitary pads on the sidewalk.
The woman tugs on his coat needily as she too looks back at me, “Hey, I don’t think she understands you. She’s a foreigner from the looks of things. Let’s just go.”
He rubs the back of his neck, pushing his sunglasses back up, hiding his eyes away once more as he focuses on the woman at his side, “Oh yes. You’re right...My bad.” He laughs it off, and he pulls her closer to his waist.
My cheeks turn hot, and I quickly scoop up the plastic bag and mutter quietly, first in English, before fixing myself and saying it in Japanese, “Thank you...I-I mean thank you.” He already starts walking away before he can hear me, and I frown, watching him and the woman mix into the crowd.
He didn’t hear me.
I sniff the air catching a vague scent of familiar blood, and it surprises me.
That woman, she isn’t a woman, she...no, he is a demon. It is an illusion they’re putting up.
What is a vampire willingly doing with a demon male? Did he know it is an illusion to which he was seeing? Was he...
My cheeks turn hotter at the thought, and I continue to walk to my apartment.
Now that is none of my business...I’m just lucky he didn’t notice what I am or if he did, I would be dead.
For that, I am grateful.
