Chapter 1

December thirteenth... Seven fifty nine PM... There was a highway. A lone, empty highway... It sat there silently, overcasted by the dead of night. The flickering street lights hovering above the nigh-dead endless stretch of land that shot beyond the horizon... The only thing that disturbed the cold, eerie landscape present here were the loud, haunting sounds of sirens... Blaring throughout the open air. There, on the side of the road, there was a large hole blown into the highway’s guard rail. An ambulance was parked just outside of it, as well as multiple law enforcement vehicles, blocking the way of the hole. A large trail of destruction led past the hole, at a large drop right off of it. A cliff, too narrow and short to notice without the aid of a light... At the bottom? A wreckage. A small, bright red automobile lay flipped over at the bottom of the drop off, the front of the car completely caved in, all of the windows shattered. Resting still on the steering wheel, layed the slumped body of an adult, a man with short black hair... Trails of blood flowed down from his face, dripping down and amazing at the edge, slowly dripping down off of it and landing on the moist carpet below... In the seat next to him, with shards of glass pierced through her face and throat, sat a woman. Her mouth full of blood, one of her eyes closed shut, the other leaking blood... Both sat lifeless in the seats, facing a large open lake, which their car had just barely missed... Outside of the car, an officer pulls hard on the door to the backseat. “Come on... Come on, damn you!” He puts his foot on the car’s tire, gritting his teeth and pulling back on it. The door finally swung open, as the cop ran into the backseat of the car. Reaching across the backseat, he looked at a small carseat in the back. Following the noise of the soft, and mumbled crying sound... He looks behind him, staring at a nurse who was examining the body of the man from outside the windshield. “Elise! Elise get in here, this kid’s alive!” The officer reaches over, quickly untangling the seatbelts on the car seat, and unbuckling them. Lifting up the large blanket that was draped over it, he looked down at who sat in it. An infant child, no more than eight months old, nine at the latest. They had short black hair, wearing a purple and white onesie, with a tattered, broken headband on her head, two small glittery pins arranged in an ‘x’ rested on the right most side of it. He carefully reaches into it, picking the little girl up out of the carseat and backing out of the car. Turning to the nurse who was now looking in at him, “Get her to the hospital, she’s still breathing!” He hands the baby out to the nurse, who looks at it, shaking her head in panic. “Is she hurt!?” The nurse takes the child, to which the cop looked back to her, “Do I look like a doctor to you? Just get her treated!” The nurse hastily takes the child, holding her in her arms as she runs off, rushing up through the paths to get to the closest ambulance... The officer looked back over at the car, sighing as he looked at the wreckage. He reached over his chest, grabbing his radio and bringing it to his mouth, slowly pressing his hand over the button. “Chief? This is Officer Ian Abadashi. We arrived at the scene, the driver and passengers are both deceased, the only survivor was an infant child in the back, she’s currently on her way to be treated as we speak.” A voice comes through on the other end of the radio, prompting him to shut it off, putting it back in it’s holster. Looking back at the wreckage of the vehicle, he exhaled deeply. “They need to fix these damn roads... Not the only folks that were lost on it, either.” He turns around, staring at the off-scene trail that the nurse went up prior. Stepping forward and trekking through back up to the highway... He opened the door to his car, stepping inside as he stared off at the moonlight. “Kid better have made it...” He puts his foot on the gas, driving away from the scene of the accident as he takes out his phone, putting it up to his ear as he begins to call someone.... “Hello? Babe?” A woman’s voice comes through on the other end of it, sounding tired, but concerned. “Hey, you okay?” ~ “Yeah, I’m fine... Couple and their kid got in an accident off of the mainroad, you know the place.” The woman at the end sighs “Death Row...?” ~ “Yeah. Parents didn’t make it, but the kid did... She’s on her way to the hospital now. I’m gonna go make sure that she turned out alright. I’m gonna be late coming home.” ~ “Are you allowed to do that?” ~ “I’m off shift as of right now. Chief’s aware... I’ll be home once I hear that the kid’s alright.” The woman sighs, before a virtual nod. “Alright... Be safe, Ian.” ~ “Yeah, thanks.” Ian hangs up his phone, turning his headlights on as he makes his way towards the hospital...

[Location Update: Faith Hill Hospital]

Ian stood outside a door, standing alongside the same nurse who had been at the crime scene with him prior. She looked up at him, nodding at him as she began to explain the situation... “Her condition is stable, so she’s definitely going to make it... We just can’t let you in right now because they’re doing scans on her to make sure she doesn’t have any internal damages.” Ian slowly nods, “Good... So. Do we have an identity of who the parents are?” The nurse nods, turning over towards the door and pulling a folder out of its spot. Opening it up and pulling out a file. “We took a blood test and found her and her family’s medical records here... Her name is Nira. Nira Denna... Born to Dan and Riez Denna.” Ian’s eyes went darker, looking at the tiles on the floor... “Doesn’t take a genius to know that they didn’t make it...” ~ “Right... So, I don’t know what her future holds for her... When we’re done treating her here, we’ll likely have to put her into foster care, or somewhere for her to stay... Somebody’s gonna have to pay for her treatment as well. Doesn’t look like her parents had an insurance card.” Ian looks over at the door, peeking in through the glass... Nira was lying on a table, images of X-Rays behind her as a doctor wrote something down on a clipboard next to her...” ~ “How long will she be here?” The nurse thinks for a moment, looking at Nira as well, before turning back to Ian. “I’m not sure... I’d give an estimate of one to three days, but it really takes however long until we determine she’s well and safe enough to go wherever she needs to go.” Ian pulled away from the glass, looking at the nurse. “Understood... Thanks, Elise.” ~ “No need to thank me, you looked stressed enough as is... Things at home okay?” ~ “Yeah, yeah they’re fine... Just, my daughters started preschool lately, so it’s been a hassle for my wife and I to go to and from.” ~ “Well, at least she’s safe while you two are at work, right?” ~ “Heh, yeah I guess that’s a fact and a half...” He pulls out his phone, glancing down at the time. Nine Forty One... It had taken him about an hour to drive to the hospital, so he looked back up at Elise. “Well, I should be going now. I’m sure that she’ll be crawling up the walls soon.” Elise gives a slight chuckle, as heart felt as she could, given the current circumstances. “Well, alright. We’ll talk later, then.” ~ “Yeah. By the way... Keep me updated on her, will you?” Ian turns around, beginning to walk off. As Elise nods, “Yeah, I can do that.” Ian flashes her a smile, the automatic doors to the hospital opening in front of him as he steps out... Closing behind him as he looked up at the sky. “Now... What exactly are we going to be able to do about her...?” He sits down on the curb, tapping his fingers on his legs. “She ain’t got anybody to take her in... We have no record of any relatives outside her parents...” He sighs, looking up at the moon above them all, “So... She really is just out of luck... She’s just left all alone.”
