Summary

I don’t need to ask what they mean by ‘Why can’t you be more like Her.’ I’m Alyssa. My sister, Roseann, is perfect. And of course, everyone expects me to be like her. I’m not. They don’t know who I am. They only know Roseann. But one day I’ll show them. I’ll show them. I’ll show them who Alyssa Cowden is.

A shadow

“Did you know ‘

silhouette’

is another word for shadow?” Roseann asked. “I’ll tell you how to spell it.

S, I, L, H, O…

I’m not listening. Even though silhouette is a word I have to learn for the spelling test.

S, I, L, H, O…LISTEN!”

I scribble ‘Silholisten’ in my study book.

“Alyssa. Show me your study book.”

“You’re not my mum,” I snap. Even though Mum’s made Roseann head of study purposes. She really said that. “Head of Study Purposes. That means she’ll help you and anyone else with studying.” That was what Mum said.

“I’m head of study purposes so you’ll give me that book. You have to,” Roseann demanded. She’s right, at the end of the day.

Silhoulisten Silhoulisten Silhoulisten.

Roseann scribbled off the three Silhoulistens. “SILHOUETTE,” she said. “S, I, L, H, O, U, E, T , T, E. Get it down. Get it right.”

She peers over me.

Silhouette. Silhouette. Silhouette.

“Now copy this down. A silhouette is the dark shape and outline of someone or something visible in restricted light against a brighter background.” Yes. That was the dictionary definition. I write down ‘A silhouette is the same thing as a shadow.’

“Now write a sentence.”

Homework sucks.

Roseann is a snob.

I write another.

Roseann is a teacher’s pet.

And another.

Roseann has foot odour and she doesn’t tell anyone especially not her stupid friends because then they would think she’s an utter weirdo and they wouldn’t want to be her friend even though she doesn’t even deserve friends because she’s a little creep and she doesn’t

The sentence couldn’t be finished because Roseann snatched the book off me. “I am not a snob! And I am not a teacher’s pet! And I definitely definitely definitely do NOT NOT NOT NOT NOT NOT have foot odour!” She ripped the page out. “Write it down! SILHOUETTE!”

Silhouette. Silhouette. Silhouette.

A silhouette is the same thing as a shadow.

Now my sentence. It has to be something with the word silhouette in. I looked at the dictionary’s example. Just something from a romance story. And then I thought. I don’t know how it came out.

Silhouette. Silhouette. Silhouette.

A silhouette is the same thing as a shadow.

I’m stuck in my sister’s silhouette.
