Summer Job

When I was 16, I took a summer job at the Westerley hotel because I wanted to buy a car. I wanted to be a lifeguard, but they said I was too young, so I ended up working as a towel girl. It was my (boring) job to give towels to the guests, replace towels with fresh ones, and pick up dirty towels that were left laying around. Basically, my entire life was towels.


My brother Jer drove me to work on his way to his job at the golf course, and picked me up on the way back. Sometimes, he got off at around the same time as me and picked me up right away. Others, I had time to kill before he came to get me.


I usually just hung around the hotel and offered to help the housekeeping staff. They’d give me some of their tips, and I could avoid boredom. It was a win/win.


One day in early August, somebody called in sick and Jer was asked to work a double shift. I had to stay at the hotel until at least 9, and I got off work at 2! No amount of helping out the housekeeping staff would have kept me from getting bored, so I decided to explore the hotel instead.


I honestly thought someone was going to stop me and send me home, but nobody did. My staff badge got me a free pass with security. Everyone else was too busy doing their job to care about a random kid wandering the hotel.
