“JANICE! I asked for those returns hours ago!”
Cybil was a huge, barrel-chested woman with red cheeks to match her mom pants and a blunt, pale haircut. She didn’t like to ask for things twice, and they all knew it.
Janice levelled her gaze, and looked the beast in the eye. “I told you they’d be ready by five.”
Pointedly, she checked her watch. It was 2:45, -5 degrees outside, and she’d taken 42 steps today. 42? Ugh. How was she already exhausted?
I’ll have to take the stairs instead of the elevator. Or skip the takeout on the way home.
There were also voicemails. Who from? Probably the bank, telling her she was late on her mortgage payment. Her mom checking in. The florist, double-confirming the wreath for grandma’s funeral. Yup. She lived an exciting life. It was totally worth sitting in this suffocating cubicle 11 hours a day to pay for it.
