Review of 'The Annihilation Code'

"This is a fantastic novel, with compelling characters and fascinating worldbuilding. The writing style is very fun to read - it gives a lot of insight into the characters and setting, successfully mixes in both humor and darker moments, and has a very distinctive voice. I really liked the cyberpunk setting, which is developed throughout the story with a variety of interesting background details that make the world feel very real - the cybrawls and floating islands are great ideas, as is the way that cyborgs and their treatment by society are portrayed. The protagonists are very compelling - each of the four main characters has a very distinct voice and perspective, from Chase's outgoing nature and internal insecurities about being a cyborg to Marisa's struggles with anxiety and past trauma. The way that the protagonists' backstories and secrets are gradually revealed as the story goes along is really fun to read, and their character dynamics with each other and the relationships that develop between them are very enjoyable as well - the gradual friendship between Atlas and Chase is very sweet, and the sibling dynamic between Atlas and Marisa is really well-written. The themes of trauma and recovery are very well-handled, and the POV-shifts between chapters work really well for exploring those themes (and the story's world in general, including the experience of being a cyborg) from multiple viewpoints. The central storyline, which sees the protagonists traveling around the floating island Ikigai II, serves as a great showcase for the world that the novel builds, introducing interesting side characters and settings which add to the background texture of the story. I particularly enjoyed the seaside boardwalk, as well as the scenes set at the party in the Bionic Corp CEO's house. The action scenes are really well-written, especially the fight scenes during the climax, and there are a lot of great twist reveals towards the ending, some of which set up a very interesting hook for a possible sequel. On the whole, I really enjoyed 'The Annihilation Code', and would highly recommend it to anyone who enjoys science-fiction and particularly cyberpunk stories. Its great characters, fascinating setting, compelling storyline, and variety of intriguing mysteries make it a wonderful choice for fans of the cyberpunk genre."
