Avoidance With Consequence

“Ugh...”

I slam my hand on my alarm clock. Slowly I get up and get ready for work. Right before I stumble out the door, I stop by Jack’s room.

“Jack? I need your healing,” I yell through the door.

He cracks the door open slightly, “You know I can’t do this forever, you’re going to have to feel the pain eventually, to get through it.”

I look up at him with pleading eyes, “Please?”

“You know I can’t resist those big bright violet eyes,” he puts his hand against my forehead and a warm feeling flows through my body, finally I feel at ease.

“Thank you!” I shout back at him as I race out the door.

As soon as I walk out of the apartment building all I see is ruin. I look down the street and I see a girl, her eyes blood red. Pulses of lightning energy radiating from her body, destroying everything it touches. I blink and she’s gone, normal people driving by everything untouched. ‘Calm down, that’s not me anymore.’ I continue towards the general hospital down the street.

As I walk into the hospital, the girl from the street, goes rushing past me in tears. I look back and see Tory staring at me. I shake my head and he’s disappeared.

“Luna, are you okay?”

I blink and Skylar appears in front of me, “No I’m not,” sparks of lightning jump across my skin.

“Let’s go up to my office, we’ll have a talk,” he puts a hand on the back of my neck at the base of my skull, forcing me to walk with him.

Once we get to his office, he sits me in front of his desk. Keeping my head in his hands, he asks, “So what’s wrong?”

“A couple years ago there was an incident where I lost control of my ability. And a few days ago, my boyfriend Tory, broke up with me. I’m scared I’ll lose control again I can feel power building inside me.”

“Have you done anything to cope with these hurt emotions?”

“I’ve had my close friend, Jack, heal my mind, keeping me in control,” I wince, “But I keep seeing my past self, I keep having flashbacks.”

I let out a huge sigh as Skylar let go of my head.

“You just need to relax, go out,” he says, leaning back into his chair, “I can’t have doctors here with their mind elsewhere, you could shock someone instead of healing them.”

I look down at my sneakers, “I know...”

“And it’s not like I could keep my hands on you all day,” Skylar raises an eyebrow, “Unless you want me to,” he smirks.

“Maybe,” I laugh.

“Get out of here,” he laughs, waving me out.

At days end, Skylar walks me home. Once we get up to my apartment he asks if I want to go out, I shake my head as I go inside.
