Chapter 1
"Where am I supposed to take him you know the consequences if they find him with me. I could be persecuted in front of the kingdom." Dextris said as he stared at the woman in front of him with a baby cradled between her arms.A frown heavily weighing down his eyebrows.
"Please help me. I don't know where to go or who to trust anymore. We've been friends since childhood, I know I can't promise you'll be safe if you help me but you're my only hope." pleaded the woman as fresh tears cascaded down her doe-like eyes, enticing pity from the man.
The man sighed and asked,"How long do you want me to keep him for Julia? I can't keep him forever. I can promise his safety as for now but not in the future. Someone's bound to discover him."
"I know Dextris, and I promise to come back for him I just need three days. If I'm not back know my spirit is no longer with you and take him somewhere safe. That is all I ask of you good friend." the woman pleaded once more now in a more hopeful tone.
Dextris held out his hands to hold the baby and Julia gave the baby to him. With that she leaned forward and laid a gentle kiss on the baby's head and muttered a tearful goodbye. She grabbed her cloak and set out into the dark night occasionally looking back at Dextris and the baby nestled in his arms.
"I hope you stay safe Julia." Dextris muttered gently so as not to disturb the child. He cradled the baby securely and hid him in his coat to protect him from the harsh cold.
Surprisingly, the baby didn't fuss at all but lay calmly. Dextris made his way back to his house and drew closer to the lit fire place in the living room. "I guess it's just you and me now little one." he spoke and walked into his room and lay the baby gently down on the bed a little closer to the fire place but not too much to make the baby uncomfortable.
Just as he was preparing to go get some food he heard people whispering close by." Careful or you'll be heard, you know what to do. Kill both of them." a dark voice whispered mercilessly. Dextrix stopped dead in his tracks a great fear growing in his heart as it pounded thunderously. He knew he had to act first and now wasn't the time to let his fear get to him. Having the knowledge that he was probably surrounded, he walked down the stairs to his basement with the child and used a passage way he'd used during his younger days.
Luckily it still looked okay to use and so he did.He was just in time to hear his front door being blown to bits and the heavy boots worn by the perpetrators stomping their way in. He moved quickly and it took him about ten minutes to reach the end of the passage way and into the dark open forest.
The baby then began crying scaring Dextris in the process. "Really, now is not a good time to cry little one. Please be quiet and I promise uncle will get you some very delicious food okay?" he clumsily pleaded with the infant as he hadn't had any experience coaxing children before.
The child seemingly understanding, quieted down to sniffling. His mouth now scrunched up into an adorable pout,an aggrieved expression showing on his face." You just keep getting weirder don't you," Dextris said and stared at the baby with a shocked expression.
He couldn't believe a one year old would be so co-operative in the first place, but he was grateful for it though. Dawn had just crept in so Dextris didn't waste time but hurriedly left not daring to wait any longer.
He could sense the people coming after him getting closer minute by minute alarming him of what that meant for him and the young one. He wasn't scared for his life but for that of the little one in his arms. His whole life he had lived selfishly for his own desires but he wouldn't do that now. Not because of anything other than the determination to keep the child safe.
Making up his mind, he ran straight for the orphanage and knocked the gate insistently. There, a guard came out complaining angrily," Who the hell do you think you are to make such a ruckus this early morning don't you know you're disturbing the peace?!"
Dextris didn't give him a chance to talk more and pleaded," Please take this child with you. I found the poor thing on the streets. I thought it would b a good choice to bring him here so I did. I have somewhere else to go so I'll be taking my leave." he finished by handing over the child to the guard and walking away quickly.
He didn't say his relation to the child for fear that the child may suffer if he was tied back to him. He knew he had to try lead his attackers away even if it killed him. He just prayed the child would be safe and if fate kept him alive, he would come back for the child and raise it.
The guard looked down at the child in his arms and couldn't believe someone would abandon such a good looking child. The child's doe eyes shone like the stars and his slightly pouty lips made him even more adorable.
The guard then walked into the orphanage carrying the child gently his anger quelled. Needless to say immediately the caretakers saw the adorable kid they couldn't help crowding next to him and fawning over him.
