Prologue

What makes a hero a hero? Popular opinion holds that it is their heroic deeds, rescuing damsels in distress, vanquishing gold hoarding dragons, or defeating dark lords who plot to take over the world. The fact of the matter is that popular opinion is wrong, it is popular opinion itself, which turns an average person with a sword or magic staff into a hero.

Now, many could argue that heroes would do the right thing if they get the credit or not; however, heroes who get no credit for their deeds or tales quickly find themselves with no coin and unable to obtain a line of credit. So no, my friends, it is the very nature of popular opinion that creates and maintains a hero. Their deeds are secondary.

In the land of Huldath in the city of Patsea lie a band of adventuring “heroes” so caught in the torrent of public opinion that they are deemed rather big heroes when in fact, they have routinely done quite the opposite of the heroic deed. Not that is to say that they are the antithesis of a hero or in any way intentionally evil, no no, they are indeed mere men and women such as you and me, however, when adventure called, it got the wrong number.

Instead of calling Av Kilmo the barbarian, slayer of a thousand kings. Instead of Alvor Millrender the archmage of the circle and discoverer of arcane knowledge thought both lost and all-powerful. Instead of the many other legitimate, do-gooding heroes that inhabit the land. Instead of these and many dozens of other actual heroes, fate and luck called up our band of and of course I mean this is as nice a way as one can say this.

Idiots.
