Introduction: What is a Dagli?

Hello! Welcome to Gunita, a collection of eleven different dagli written by different authors and the author of this collection, all translated in both English and Filipino!

For those who are already familiar what a dagli is, especially for the people who had read the first story of this collection’s author entitled “Do This in Memory of Me”, you may skip and go read the next page, but for those who are unfamiliar with such, let us answer the age-old question. What is a dagli?

Let us make this quick for you not to be bored out of your minds! Dagli in Tagalog—roughly translated as “sketches” or a “sketch”—refers to a brief story that is no longer than two-thousand words, meaning that is shorter than a short story. A dagli can also be called as “flash fiction”. A dagli doesn’t have a plot or any rising actions because they’re mostly focused on a descriptive prose narrative writing.

It made its way into the Philippines and had historically influenced Philippine literature, but its origin of its introduction to the country is still unknown.

To continue, there are many debates as to how long should a dagli be, but according to Eros Atalia—an author, professor, and journalist in the Philippines—he quoted “there are no rules as to how long should a dagli be”, but the usage of words should be considered and utilized wisely. More importantly, it should “show the story” and not “tell”, and should have a twist or a punchline in the end.

And we’re done! Pretty short, right? Now that you have some sort of knowledge about what a "dagli" is, I hope that this information will help you understand the culture and the art of writing a dagli with the following stories in the upcoming pages written by many lovely authors.

So, are you ready to take on and read a dagli? If so, you had come to the right place! Enjoy the ride, and welcome, once again... but if you skipped reading this and are lazy as I am, here is the introduction in a nutshell:

- Dagli, a Tagalog word translated as “sketches” or a “sketch” in English.

- A story that is shorter than a short story. Also called as “flash fiction”.

- Doesn’t have a plot and is a descriptive prose narrative writing.

- “Shows” the story and has a twist or punchline in the end.

Happy now?

-------------------------------------

Mabuhay!

Maaari ding tawagin bilang "flash fiction."

- Walang banghay at isang pagkukuwentong paglalarawan.
