The room was still, except for the softness of his breath filling the empty space. The bedsheets were a tangle of white amongst their limbs trapping the heat between them. And there, Nefier lay beside him, golden eyes gazing at the form of his love, his prince, Ethra. The moon lit him in a pale glow, his already fair skin turned white while his hair took a silvery sheen.
He wasn't asleep, but stared up at the intricate patterns that adorned the dark ceiling. Thinking, Nefier supposed, or perhaps he had reached a state of utter relaxation and nothing was going through his head at all. Either way, Nefier didn't wish to disturb him, though he knew he couldn't continue to lay in bed much longer on the off chance someone did decide to walk in. A lot of people had gotten drunk at the party and when that happened they loved to wander and open doors that weren't their rooms. If someone saw him in the prince's bed...
"Are you staring at me again?"
"No... Yes. What do you mean 'again'?" he asked, snapping back to attention.
"You do that a lot. Stare at me, I mean." Ethra turned onto his side, looking back at Nefier.
"You're beautiful," Nefier answered simply.
A faint blush crept across Ethra's face and Nefier smiled.
"I love you." He sat up, leaning over to kiss him, then continuing with the motion to get up.
"Where are you going? Stay." Ethra grabbed hold of his arm.
"You know I can't stay in bed with you. If someone saw us I--"
"Would lose your job. Yes, I know." But he still didn't let go. "What if I ordered you? Would you still say no?"
"For this? Yes. Your father would have my head." He kissed the hand that held him.
Ethra pouted, but relented, letting Nefier go. "It's not fair." He laid back with a sigh, running a hand through his hair.
"I know." Nefier gave him a sad smile, shrugging his clothes back on to return to his duty. Most of his life had felt unfair, this part was no different, though it hurt more. He tried not to think about it and shook his head.
"I can kiss away those bad thoughts." He wore a grin that said, "Come back to bed and forget about the world a little longer."
But he couldn't.
"No, you rest. I'll watch over you." While he knew what Ethra had said about being worried that someone might wander into his room with flirtatious intent was just a ploy for them to be alone together, he did think it was something that very well could happen. He settled himself into a seated position on the chaise lounge, a brilliant satin orange turned muted grey in the dark of the room.
A warm kiss pressed into the crook of his neck. "Goodnight, Nefier."
He listened as Ethra settled in the sheets.
"Goodnight, my prince."
