Chapter 1
She was running down a dark ally, sticking close to the shadows along the walls. Her shoes clanked softly on the pavement. The rain had only just died down and the ground had mist eerily rolling off it from the afternoon heat. Distorted light from the neon sign on the main road shone dully across the white van parked on the left of the confined space, it had been reversed in. She couldn’t see any distinguishing features, just a plain old white van.
'This had to be the getaway vehicle', she thought to herself. Crouching low behind it she pulled her gun out, taking a quick glance inside to the driver’s window she could see it was empty. 'No getaway driver' that was odd. 'Maybe I was wrong, maybe the transaction wasn't taking place tonight', doubting herself she slowly stood up straight and proceeded to the back of the van.
Giving the handle a tug which produced no result as it was locked she turned to the right and continued to the back entrance of the club directly beside the suspicious van. The ally ended a few meters past the door, high brick walls surrounded her. 'There is no place to hide if I'm compromised, there isn't even a dumpster around here' she thought dismally.
Calling for backup was out of the question, she had already led her colleges on a wild goose chase several times before in her pursuit of this group and her boss would not appreciate another one. No hard evidence they would tell her, a waist of recourses the others would say. She couldn't be sure that the deal was even going down here. The intel was not the most reliable, an anonymous tip of that led to a guy who knew a guy who's second cousin was involved. It sounded silly in her own mind just recalling it.
'I really didn't think this through', she shook her head clearing her jumbled thoughts. Lifting an extended hand to the door handle 'Only one way to find out'.
She was surprised to say the least when she found it unlocked but before she had a chance to pull the heavy door open, it slammed open from a force on the other side. 'I’m too close', she panicked as the door connected with her head, and stumbling back, she hit the side of the van dropping her gun and sunk to the ground.
Pain erupted from her forehead and little white lights flooded her vision. She could barely make out the figures in front of her but one had crouched down with his hand now caressing her head. "Such an inquisitive little mouse you are”, the figure muttered. 'His voice sounds like honey', were the last coherent thoughts that ran through her mind as she passed out.
