Raakshasa: the Demon

Part 1

On a night like this, he would not have been out. But tonight, it was different. The curfew was on as usual. It was risky to go out. Shoot at sight orders were issued. After all, too many people had been killed, rather slaughtered. But OM was hungry and so was he. It had been two days since they had a decent meal. He must get something to eat.

MO (rhymes with ‘slow’) cautioned his son not to get out and stealthily made his way out of the window, else, the patrolling officers might notice him or worse he might be espied by something else. He tiptoed his way into the dark alleys to stay away from any prying eyes. Now as he entered an alley, he saw an open window and advanced towards it, instantly he stopped, petrified at the sight of two eyes looking at him. The eyes burnt in the dark.

“Meow “, called the author of the eyes and MO sighed in relief though his heart still throbbed hard. He advanced towards the open window. He strained his eyes and ears to listen for any sign of food. Suddenly his ears were invaded by a suppressed but intense scream. Somebody was in trouble. He jumped into the room….

Splash! Thud!

MO slipped over some liquid. Something warm. He knew the smell. He heard a groan. He moved towards the direction of the sound and encountered a stupendous sight – a beast was eating the entails of the author of the scream. This beast was the culprit of so many incidents of gruesome murders, where the victims had much of their body parts missing. The room was dark and yet the tremendous dimensions of the beast could be perceived. Though it was crouching over the dead person, it appeared to be a foot or two taller than MO. MO himself was around five feet and around ten inches. The animal seems to be a grizzly bear on super steroids. It was covered with pitch black fur which made it almost invisible in the darkness. Its hands were that of a full grown gorilla only with claws of a tiger. The little light that entered the room from outside reflected on these huge claws. The teeth though smeared with blood could be seen. The teeth to tear flesh. A stream of saliva dropped from one of the incisors.

The beast looked straight into MO’s eyes. He knew what was next….

“Beta, I am home. . . and look what I have brought, enough food for the whole week.”

MO took out various stuff from a sack and placed them on a table in front of his son, who looked at it hungrily.

The next day. . .

“Sir, I think we don’t need the curfew anymore, somebody had killed the beast.” Apparently, police Inspector spoke with passive optimism. The Commissioner was inspecting the crime scene. Looking at the remains of the beast the commissioner replied, “Yes, maybe we don’t need the curfew anymore, but who could have had killed a beast like this…? Moreover, are we sure there was just one these? What if. . . ”

“God have mercy on us if there be more. The good news is that that the forensics have confirmed that there was only this beast by its nail marks and other hints.”

“Good, good. . . I hope we are through this.”
