Life on Pause
‘Life passes me by’
Just a line in a book;
Words filled with meaning
but passed by in a look.
And truth be told,
I believed it too.
Thought it was a simple expression
without very much ado.
I was wrong.
That much is clear.
I was wrong, so wrong—
I found that out last year.
I had thought it to be
an expression of peace.
A thought that every day
passes by with great ease.
But while that may be true,
the days pass too fast.
Awake and then asleep again;
the days never last.
The mornings blend together,
the nights play on repeat.
The seasons come and go—
first the cold and then the heat.
It doesn’t mean I was unhappy
because truly, I was not.
For family or love or laughter,
I can’t say I ever sought.
But the problem with it was
that there was simply no change.
While the world changed around me,
I stayed just the same.
I suppose in a way, it’s a good thing—
at least I was never anguished.
But whatever passion I had inside me
just might have been extinguished.
Perhaps I’m being dramatic.
It’s not that big a deal.
Things will get better eventually.
The world will begin to heal.
But until then, I’m stuck.
No movement front or back.
It’s just a life on pause
