Prologue
The chorus of what sounds like women singing faintly in my room is driving me crazy. I’m so hot, yet the cold winter air is causing my sweat-soaked body to shiver. Looking around I saw the bright white full moon lighting the dark, quiet night.
In a coughing fit I stand up, commanding my weak knees to move towards the table where the bowl of water was. Right when the rim of the bowl was touching my lips, I drop the glass bowl as a banshee cry of a woman comes from the thick trees of the woods.
Dragging my weak, fevered body out of my home, I quickly run into the trees fully unarmed and empty hands. My heart feels like it will beat a way out of my chest. A fox? The cry of a woman in pain was a fox? I stand still for a moment, realizing the poor creature was trembling of fear, so I spoke no words, no sound did the creature make.
Whimpering, the creature starts to lick his hind leg. Then I noticed the white sticking out. The poor creature broke his leg. I begin to look around to find something to help, only to find a wide flat stone. My heart drops down to my stomach knowing full well what I must do. Walking slowly to my left, I ask the creature what caused the wound and how large were the teeth. As raise the stone to end his pain I see new eyes were watching me from between the trees.
“Run” the fox orders, using his last breath.
The monster growl before it lunges. I quickly turn and run, trying to save what little life I had left. Like a deer in this chase, flying across the forest floor. I try with all my might to pray, but I’ve forgotten every prayer, of returning home to you.
My ankle catches on a tree root, forcing me to fall face first onto the ground. The creature is very, very close. I’m trying to get up, I’m still clutching my life and wishing to keep it. The monster is a large black wolf, and he’s growling low while snapping his chops. My dear, I’ve found something in the woods somewhere.
