Prologue

" Lilly, I'd love to hear your story." My niece from my father's white daughter told me. She was a kind child loving just like her grandfather. Her mother, however, was as evil as her grandmother. She never accepted me because I was half Negro. That is to be expected.

"I was born in 1774. My momma was a beautiful Negro woman. My father, your pawpaw was an amazing white man." I smiled as I looked down at her.

" No Aunt Lilly, I want the whole story. You never told me more than that. You're royalty now. I want to know, I'm old enough!"

She all but whined at me. She calls me Aunt Lilly, I never allowed it. Not because of the term but because Amilia never let her. She would go on and on about how it wasn't proper because I'm half Negro. But my sweet Julia called me that anyway, not always but usually when we were alone.

"Where is your mother Julia?"

I asked looking around. I knew if she heard it she would freak out. This time my father was not here to stop her cruel and unruly ways.

" She left for Lanbridge today, she won't be back for a month." She replied beaming with hope. I looked into her eyes and they were full of excitement. Her eyes were filled with light.

" Fine, I'll tell you," I said while sitting on my bed. Patting beside me so she'd know to sit.
