Chapter 1
Brenda looked at her face in the wood-framed oval mirror. The girl looks beautiful in the clothes she is wearing. A suit model shirt with matching dark blue pants. He has clear eyes and thick eyelashes. The dimple on his left cheek also looks perfect. His body was as tall as shoulder-length black hair. Her lips are thin and always red. A satin blend with balzer wraps around her slender body. She looks fashionable.
Brenda is experiencing the turmoil of life that is not comparable to reality. Brenda’s life had now turned a hundred and eighty degrees from before. She is no longer a rich girl full of wealth. Now Brenda is a poor girl who has to pay off all her debts in the bank. Paying off a credit card that is quite large, so he struggles to find extra money.
“One hundred million rupiah? Oh my God… Where did I get that money from?” He muttered to himself as he remembered his debts in the bank.
The world was so crowded that he had to helter-skelter to work hard. All he did, before the collectors charged his house with terrible blasphemy. Like a debt collector who recently cursed him for being in arrears in payments.
‘Oh God… Help me…’ she whispered in prayer. Brenda sighed for a moment, then agreed to the prayer that was asked for in prostration every day. Hope the goddess of fortune returns to his lap.
Brenda took the dark brown stilettos from the shoe rack. He wore the shoes on his smooth feet. High heels with an elegant shape. The shoes he bought a few months ago. When he still has savings. Slightly bowed Brenda adjusted her shoes. After that, he smoothed out a short-sleeved shirt with a matching color combination. He glanced at his appearance in the mirror. Arranged her beautiful shoulder-length hair and tucked the strands of hair up to her earlobe. He didn’t want to seem messy in front of a woman named Maryati. A fresh flower entrepreneur who has several shops in his city. The 48-year-old woman offered Brenda a job. He has a son named Ryan.
Brenda accepted the offer happily. This is an opportunity, he thought. Opportunities that determine the course of his life.
“Streamline my journey, O Allah...” he asked the Almighty.
Brenda has been a teacher since a few months ago. Since the culinary business he runs has gone bankrupt. Since all the doors were closed for him and since the sun had turned not to look at him. Brenda lost everything. The handle of life, self-confidence and those close to it.
Brenda almost gave up when her money was brushed off by a guy who took advantage of her wealth. The guy who made Brenda disappointed because of his actions. The guy was having fun with the other girls using Brenda’s credit card for shopping and fun. Now Brenda has to pay the guy’s debts to the bank. Brenda was embarrassed when she remembered the boy. Now everything has disappeared. The world is turned upside down like a wagon wheel. Brenda fell into poverty and she was about to start over from scratch. He tried to find a job, but still with the same tone. No vacancies yet.
It turns out that a beautiful appearance is not enough to support a job application. The proof is that Brenda was rejected by almost ten companies. Brenda was also on the verge of despair when her path in life nearly closed. Ela advises Brenda to give her knowledge to children in need.
Ela, a girl with short hair about Brenda’s age. He is luckier than Brenda, who has a steady job and a very loyal lover. The tan-skinned girl is indeed a smart girl. He has completed his studies in Melbourne a few years ago.
Brenda accepts Ela’s proposal to teach the children from house to house. Private lessons are now mushrooming in the city. Brenda could boast of a pretty watery brain.
“Perfect,” he thought.
Brenda’s smile grew. Soon the money will flow into his account. He hadn’t had a hot cup of coffee at Starbucks or his regular Coffee Box in a long time. Recreation to the shores of Lake Toba and vacation to neighboring countries. Or shop at well-known boutiques in the city of Medan. The boutique prepares goods with famous brands.
Brenda grabbed the car keys on the buffet and exited the room smiling. The sound of his soles pounding against the tiled floor.
“I’ll go first, Bik ...” he said goodbye to the maid. “Don’t forget to take my order.” He said then.
“Okay, ma’am...” the maid replied and then went to the kitchen.
Brenda walked to her car. A low year old sedan parked in front of the house. The car looks apprehensive with a pathetic shape. The paint is starting to fade and peel off. Lots of rust beside the barn. The car door was also cracked.
Brenda bought the car a few months ago. A friend sold him cheaply. Used car, but still driveable.
Brenda got into the car. For a moment he looked at his very old car. Candy wrappers are strewn under the chairs. Oh… disgusting. A musty smell wafted through the car. Brenda swallowed her saliva. He picked up the trash and threw it out. The air conditioner inside is a little problematic. He could imagine how tormented it would be in a car without air conditioning.
“Ughhh…” Brenda complained a little.
Brenda started the car several times. The car won’t start. He just remembered that the car did not have gasoline.
“Oh my God... My suffering is complete,” he muttered annoyed.
Brenda got out of her car and saw a moped which wasn’t looking too good either. Like it or not, he had to approach the motorbike and ride it.
There was a bit of sadness in his heart when he had to ride the motorbike. She feels her pride as a successful girl has been taken away by the selfishness she has achieved so far. Annoyance and a sense of wanting to cry are often present when he has to close his wallet tightly to buy something. He also had to pay for the maid who always accompanied him. Sometimes mom can’t bear it if Brenda can’t afford to pay her maid. Mama kindly paid the maid’s salary.
After turning on the starter, the motor slid down the black road. Follow Sisingamangaraja street then turn left onto Juanda street. Brenda smiled faintly through the rearview mirror. He couldn’t wait to meet Maryati. The pay is quite satisfactory, until he cancels all his promises to Ela.
Ella is a good friend. He completely understood Brenda’s feelings. Not like other friends. When she fell and slumped, it was Ela who encouraged Brenda. Although Ela’s nature is sometimes annoying, Ela is still number one as a true friend. Brenda’s troubles weren’t a problem for Ela.
Brenda reminisced about her heyday three years ago when she lost her job due to the economic recession at the convection company where she worked. The sun seemed to stop rolling its golden light. Darkness enveloped the world. The stars in the sky obscured themselves, as if they didn’t want to stare at Brenda’s slump. Brenda felt a loss of grip. The people nearby also started to drift away.
Starting from Ela’s brilliant proposal to open a restaurant and fast food culinary business. This business is booming in the city of Medan. It takes extra learning to cook professionally to get delicious and quality dishes. Plus affordable prices and meet the tastes of the bottom to the top.
Initially Brenda’s culinary business grew rapidly. Many customers are satisfied with the service and cuisine. Different flavors with tantalizing menus. Cultivate an extraordinary appetite.
Brenda is busy taking care of customers who are mostly from out of town, there are even some from neighboring countries, Malaysia and Singapore. Some young entrepreneurs from Thailand and China. Truly extraordinary. A day he can get a turnover of tens of millions of rupiah. Brenda is full of wealth and entrusts her business to a tall, oriental-looking guy. The guy’s name is Franky.
It turns out that Franky used up all of Brenda’s venture capital and ran away with her stash. He broke into Brenda’s savings, credit cards and ATMs until they were sold out. In fact, Brenda loves Franky more than anything that she believes all of Franky’s rotten wits. Brenda is depressed when she finds out Franky spent all the money in his savings and left with another woman. He didn’t know who to complain to. Only Ela, the only friend who understands Brenda’s feelings.
Brenda borrowed capital from mama and re-run her culinary business from scratch. Capital is still not enough. He borrowed from the bank by pawning the house papers. In the second year, Brenda’s business went into a slump. I don’t know what the problem is until their customers turn away for no reason. Brenda is trying to restore the quality and quality of the cuisine, but still the customers are decreasing. Brenda ran out of venture capital and finally she sold the place and cooking utensils to someone. Brenda desperately needs money to pay off her debts.
Since experiencing the crisis Brenda does not want to depend on her parents. Brenda wants to be independent. He rented a simple house in the area of Jalan Sisingamangaraja. Brenda switched professions as a freelance teacher at a university and opened private lessons for homeschooled children. Brenda actually felt embarrassed-depressed-disappointed-angry. What about the comments of his friends, neighbors and close relatives? Will they laugh at him? Brenda, who used to be full of wealth, is now a poor girl who is completely deprived. Without luxury cars, expensive clothes and accessories at a price of millions of rupiah. Brenda need not be ashamed to think about what people think of her. The world is always spinning all the time. So it’s not wrong if Brenda is currently a teacher and lives a simple life.
To support her knowledge and new job, Brenda was forced to take computer courses, read a lot of books and buy books about education. So far he only knows the world of buying and selling and cooking. He studied the world of the internet. Not only that, he also took foreign language lessons, English-Mandarin-Japanese.
Wow, Brenda feels stressed too, but for the sake of her survival and future, Brenda must have more potential. Brenda has been teaching from one house to another. Not a short distance to be covered, until he arrived home late at night.
Thank goodness God gave Brenda a pretty smart brain, so she could learn everything quickly. English is easier to master than Japanese and Mandarin. Now it’s like a mushroom, everywhere there are many foreign language schools. If there is only one house that is labeled as a foreign language school, then the next door neighbor also does not want to lose, in participating in opening the same business. He said that opening a school is more profitable, and the procedure is not difficult. That’s how people follow trends.
In just three months, Brenda has got several children to receive her education. Brenda is grateful that her first customer is a child of Chinese descent, asking to be taught English. Then two junior high school students who want to learn Mathematics.
The first success led Brenda to the next success. Of course the success of this first transaction gave Brenda a hefty income. Brenda smiled happily seeing the business she had started succeeding in the first step. This is a good sign to start the second step.
