another day
Why he couldn’t of just let me have a good school day? Of course he does something to ruin it, and no one cares. They all worship him, not knowing how truly pathetic he really is and it’s funny that none of the teachers really care. It becomes too much sometimes and I feel like curling up into a ball on the ground.
What started off as harmless pranks became literal social suicide. I walked into school in a happy mood only to open my locker to find my underwear spilling out of it. I turned only to find Mateo Armand looking at me laughing with the rest of the crowd that had formed.
Long story short the principal came and disbanded those idiots, but as soon as he saw who did it, he told me to clean it up but let Mateo go with no trouble. I didn’t miss the smirk he gave me before he left with no consequences.
That’s what happens when your Mom is too friendly and invites someone who despises you to your house and they take a detour to your room.
Now I’m in last period, learning about how letters somehow fit into math problems.
“Ainsley what is number 7?” the teacher suddenly questioned, zoning me out of my thoughts. I guess you could see I was confused because everyone around me started laughing, even the teacher let go a giggle.
Trying to stay professional she recovers and sighed, “If you were paying attention you would know the answer. Start doing that!” I could feel my face turning hot and I was sure it was all pink by now from embarrassment. Just as I was about to respond the speakers went off.
“Hello Tigers! It’s Melissa Rennings, your student council president! Don’t forget to buy your tickets to the pep rally Thursday!” she cheered. The classroom started buzzing with murmurs and excitement. I didn’t see the point in pep rallies. Why have a party for a team that’s gonna probably lose when we have the cheerleaders to do that already.
Maybe I’m just saying this because I have no friends to go with, but if my mom got word of this she would make me go. With or without someone, that woman is desperate to live through me. Not to be mean but she once forced me to go to a football game and I sat there alone all night.
After the excitement died down the bell rang. I was out of the door so fast I couldn’t even hear the teacher giving us the bell doesn’t dismiss you speech. What is it there for? Decoration.
When I was outside I looked for my ride but I couldn’t find my mom, so I started walking home. Everyone asks why I don’t just get my license like a normal sixteen year old girl. I’ve tried FIVE times. The first time was when I didn’t even know what a turn signal was and the others were just rookie mistakes.
While walking a Ford Mustang pulled up beside me and I knew who it was, so I started speed walking. Eventually I got tired so I slowed down, he caught up to me so I looked to the right to see Mateo Armand with his windows down looking at me.
“Your mom told me to pick you up from school. Get in the car before I change my mind. Especially with that little stunt you just pulled,” he stated while he was looking me straight in the eye. He didn’t have to tell me twice before I was in that car, all that walking tired me out. Not wanting to make any conversation I looked down at my phone like I had a social life to attend to.
We drove at least 15 minutes until I realized that we had passed my house, I was now panicking, looking at my surroundings to see If I could spot where we were. Mateo could see how bothered I was but he just laughed at me and looked towards the road. About fifteen more minutes had passed and we arrived at an out-of-town diner.
“If you wanted to take me out for food at a diner you could’ve gone to the one in our town,” I teased while getting out of the car and walking over to the entrance. Before he followed he looked around and quickly entered.
“I would’ve if I wasn’t ashamed to be seen with you,” he chuckled, finding a seat to sit in. Not that I expected better from him but it still hurt to hear. When we were all settled and knew our orders he flagged the waitress to come to collect our orders.
“Hello what can I get you guys,” she said in a flirty tone looking at Mateo. He looked up at her with a smirk and she started blushing. I was there feeling uncomfortable.
“I’ll have the metro pancakes and hickory smoked bacon on the side,” he answered while looking at her. She giggled and copied that down. She finally turned to me and her smile dropped. “What can I get you?” she grumbled looking at me.
Feeling kind of uncomfortable with her tone but not wanting to make a scene I ordered anyway, “Can I have the avocado toast and your flavored coffee of the day?” I stated while putting the menu down. She groaned while writing it down and walked away.
We sat in silence for about five minutes while he was on his phone ignoring me. I was tired and therefore I made the decision to confront him on why I was here. “Why am I here last time I checked you were embarrassing me in front of people at school,” I complained.
He looked up and laughed, and looked back at his phone. At that point, I didn’t know what to say or do so I stayed quiet.
Ten minutes had passed since then and the waiter had returned with our food and her number for Mateo. We were still in silence until Mateo spoke up “Look I need your help in school.” he mumbled. That got my attention and I looked up.
“What for?” I questioned. He sighed and responded, “I’ll get kicked off the football team if I fail English this semester and the English teacher recommended I ask you for help.”
I was silent and shocked at what he had said. Mateo Armand asking me for my help after everything that he’s ever done to me. Then I got the idea of helping him in return for something.
“Well are you gonna help me Annie?” he drawled out waiting for me to respond. I was too busy thinking of a favor for him to give me in exchange.
“I’ll tell you what, I’ll help you if you give me a complete makeover and give me a social life,” I stated. He looked completely stunned but quickly nodded his head.
He paid for our food and then we left. It took us 30 minutes to get back because he insisted on going out of town.
When we stopped in front of my house I rushed out of the car without saying a word. I went into the living room to find my mom closing the curtains on our huge windows. I looked around hoping to find my father until I remember he’s out on business.
“Hey, little birdie what’s up,” my mom says when she notices me, I smile at the nickname she has called me since elementary school. “Nothing much mom I’m gonna go get ready for bed” I informed her. Before she could answer I was already up the stairs going to my room.
After I took a shower I got dressed and hopped in bed to watch Netflix only to hear my phone ding. Which was very unlike it because people don’t text me.
It was Mateo.
Mateo: what days can you tutor me?
I quickly retorted with something, wanting to give him a hard time like he did to me earlier.
Me: what days can you take me shopping? lol
Mateo: any day other than wednesday or friday
I don’t know what happened in those seconds but I felt a surge of boldness take over me.
Me: what’s on those days?
Mateo: football or parties, stuff like that
That didn’t last quickly until I realized how uninterested I was in having a conversation with him.
I sent him a quick message about how I can tutor on Monday.
He didn’t answer after that but that didn’t bother me. Another episode of Gossip Girl was calling my name. While watching I realized how determined and domineering Blair Waldorf is. She would be an amazing role model for me. That’s when I got the idea.
