Prologue

Prologue

“Good night,” said Jace as he entered into the store, his face smooth and pale with not a grain of hair upon his face. He took his right hand, combing his brown hair forward as he took off his black beanie hat. He wore a newly bought brown leather jacket, fitted to his lean size.

“Those kids must be having a blast out there,” replied the mid-aged female cashier as she watched him pass her by, heading toward the shelves with all the snacks.

“They are,” he told her. “Every Halloween gets even crazier for some reason.”

He began filling a small basket with every different snack he could find until the basket couldn’t take anymore. He placed it all on the counter, proceeding toward the fridge at the back; grabbing two six packs of Budweiser. He paid his bill and walked out with a big brown paper bag with all his items halfway hanging out. As he sat down on his motorcycle, he placed the bag at the centre of his legs. When it was time to have it started, his phone rang playing Imagine Dragons’ “It’s Time” as his ringtone.

“Hey, you miss me already?” Jace asked with a broad smile across his face.

“Of course I do. Did you get everything?” his wife Sera spoke over the phone. “The kids in the neighbourhood are still here, waiting on our porch. Hurry up and come home.”

“I’ll be there in a few seconds,” he replied. “I got us some beers if you know what I’m thinking.”

“Beers,” she repeated giggling. “Are you planning to get me drunk and take advantage of me?” she asked jokingly.

“Oh yeah,” he admitted. “You up for rounds two?” he asked.

“I’m all yours baby,” she confessed. “Now hurry and get back here.”

“Okay,” he said before hanging up.

After he started up his bike, he drove away from the store. He got toward the end of the block, but before he had a chance to enter into the main street, a car struck him from behind. He was tossed forward, hitting his head upon the windscreen of a passing car. All of his items lay scattered about as he bled from the side of his head and nose. His body lay at the centre of the road with other cars passing him by while he lay drenched in his own blood. No movement came from him, nor any sounds out of his mouth. His eyes closed as if he were already dead.

Obsidian: He's hilarious. Like, actually. I loved it. You're writing style is great, although you could do with a few less murmurs and mutters. I know it sounds critical, but I have the same problem and I hate it. Overall, it was one of the best stories I've read on here so far. I liked it better than those M...
