Chapter 1 ~ In the dungeon

“This position isn't right, Abigail. Your legs need to be a bit higher.”

In one fluid motion, the man slipped his strong arms under my legs and dragged me down. Quickly, his broad shoulders contracted as he leaped on top of me and pinned my shoulders down on the dirt floor.

He was hovering over me and pushing all his weight down onto my shoulders so that I couldn’t move. The air was knocked out of me at his sadistic move and, when I looked up, I saw him grinning down at me.

Fuck… he’s so damn handsome.

I laid there, caged beneath him, and heard him chuckle as beads of sweat dripped down from his face.

“I’m a little disappointed, Abigail. I thought you were skilled.”

I felt lightheaded and I almost lost my focus as his sweet earthy scent invaded my senses. My eyes snapped open. There was no way in hell I was going to let this happen. “No giving in, no giving up” — those were the words that had become my life’s creed. However, putting my determination to uphold those words aside, it would ultimately hurt my pride if I lost myself to this handsome hulk. Gathering all my confidence, I abruptly straightened my right arm and smacked him on his left ear. The look of shock he had on his face was priceless! I savored every second of it.

He shut his eyes, trying to hastily recover from my attack, but I was faster. Thrusting my knee upwards, I pushed all my force against his hip to break his balance. Just when he started to fall forward, I swiftly rolled out of my previous pinned position. Sliding my right hand under his armpit, I clasped the back of his head into a firm headlock. I had him flat on his face as I held him down and moved my right knee to the middle of his back. Pertaining more pressure to make sure he wouldn’t move, I leaned down right next to his ear.

“You were absolutely right about me, Mister. I am very skilled.”

Unable to fight back or escape my headlock, he tapped out, declaring his defeat. All of my fellow jailbirds gave me a round of applause. I smiled and grabbed the bottle of water that was offered by Emma — the most normal and generous prisoner I met today. Her long brown hair was twisted into a braid that fell to her waist and she possessed a pair of beautiful golden eyes. Emma looked like she was about to explode from happiness.

“No one has ever won against Louis, except you!” she cheered.

So, his name was Louis…

“Hmmm? Is that so, Louis?” I interrogated.

Grabbing my denim jacket, I donned it over the once white t-shirt before I turned around to study the man I had just defeated. Crossing my arms over my chest, I tilted my head to the side and watched him as he stood up and dusted himself off.

Louis studied me for a full minute and then let out a pretentious snort. “You can't be a human… you lied. You must be a rogue. Were you kicked out from a neighboring pack?”

“What are you talking about?” I carefully asked.

Was he mocking me? I had no idea what these people were struggling with, except for the fact that they had some crazy delusions. Did they all suffer from the same mental disorder?!

“You would have smelled it if she was a rogue. She smells like a human and, just because she out fought you, you shouldn’t accuse her like that,” Emma interrupted.

Ignoring her admonishment, Louis grabbed a nearby towel and wiped the sweat from his forehead. “She’s too tough to be a human.” His words came out low and almost like a whisper.

“But, that's what I am,” I asserted, smiling proudly while patting my own shoulder. I had long figured out that self-confidence was the key to the bravery and I practiced it as much as possible.

At my words, Emma's lips quirked up into a smile, but Louis threw me a suspicious glance as he continued to towel off his face. “But, if you are really a human, why are you here and who brought you?” he asked.

"I don't know his name, but a nutty old man kidnapped me.” Grunting slightly, I plopped down onto the bunk mattress. “I remember that I was sketching by a beautiful lake beside the hospital. As I sat there, the old guy came up to me and asked me to sketch a picture of his king. I didn't know which king he was referring to; so, I asked him to describe the king’s features for me. When I finished, I showed him the sketch, and then suddenly I found myself locked up in here!”

Louis's face held a pensive expression. “What exactly did you draw?”

“You wanna see it?”

They both nodded and I opened my backpack to take out my sketchbook. It was always in my bag. I never even thought of going anywhere without it. Their gazes were fixed on me as I flipped through the pages to find the reason why I was in this hell hole.

“Here.”

I handed my sketchbook over to Emma and instantly, saw her gasp in surprise. Looking over at the drawing, I smiled down at the strong and compact body that was tinged with a yellow-gold coloring pencil that I used. He had powerful forelegs, sharp teeth, and jaws that looked capable of crushing a car.

Louis moved closer to inspect the sketch and snorted in disbelief, “It's a lion!”

Furrowing my brows, I explained, “The old man said that his king was smart and cunning, but sometimes arrogant and temperamental. That he was aloof and would kill anyone who dared to touch him. To top it all off, the old geezer looked like he just emerged from the freaking jungle so I thought he was describing a lion.”

Immediately, Louis busted out laughing and leaned so far back that he fell on the dirt floor.

“Oh…oh, God!” His body shook with laughter as tears swam in his eyes. “My brother surely would have sentenced you to death if he had heard about all of this.”

“Your brother?”

Okay… what was going on? I blinked and looked over to Emma, who was more composed than Louis at the moment. She was staring at me with pursed lips. I guess she saw my confused expression because she gave me a curt nod.

“That’s right and he is also our Alpha and royal king. Alpha Alexis.”

I couldn’t think of anything to say to Emma’s admission. This was so surreal. Maybe I was dreaming? I mean, I was in a castle dungeon for crying out loud! Louis continued cackling and Emma let out a tired sigh.

“Have you ever heard of werewolves?” she asked.

“As in like ‘Teen Wolf’?”

I was trying my best to be careful around these people. Who knew what they would do once their delusions were shattered! Maybe, they had obsessed over that series to the point where they actually believed werewolves were real.

Louis stifled his laughter, raised a brow at me, and asked, “What's that?”

He wasn't pretending, he really didn't know! I looked over at Emma and she seemed just as confused as him!

“It’s a worldwide famous TV series. How do you not know about it?”

Had they lived under a rock their whole lives? I really couldn't understand these people. Louis scratched his face as he looked down at his dirty boots.

“It must be famous in the human world. But, not here.”

Biting my tongue to restrain myself from yelling, I stood up to stretch my legs. They could believe whatever they wanted… I just wanted to get out of here!

“So you are saying this is a different world?” I asked, trying to keep my tone as natural as possible. From experience, I learned very well how to deal with people who had mental disorders amongst other things. Actually, it had become my specialty. As I looked at the pair in front of me, I couldn’t help but feel pity towards them. They must be suffering a lot.

“Yes,” Emma nodded.

I sighed in frustration. “Then can you explain to me why I’m in this damned dungeon?”

“You disparaged the king, which is enough to sentence someone to death. Luckily the old man you talked about put you in here, the dungeon of Meladus Castle,” informed Louis.

I shrugged a shoulder, speechless. “And the king is… your brother.”

“I know what you’re thinking, Abigail.” He chuckled at my blank expression. “Yes, the king is my brother. Let me clear it up for you… Emma is my best friend. In her efforts to marry my brother, I helped her come up with and execute many different proposals. So, for a whole day, we were sent here for annoying the king.”

I gaped at him. Yep… these people had issues.

“But, you are a prince and his brother!”

He shrugged. “That never mattered to him.”

“Wow, harsh…” I paused as an idea popped into my head. “But, you are the prince! Surely, you can get out of this place whenever you want?”

He viciously shook his head. “That is the last thing I will do; but… let me guess, you want my help to get out of here?”

Uh… duh! I was almost at the point of screaming in frustration to get out of this Godforsaken place! I looked at him, my eyes full of hope.

Louis observed me for a minute then shifted his gaze lazily to the guards. Suddenly, his face split into a wicked grin. “Well, I never said that I wouldn’t help you,” he mumbled.

“You will?”

Whilst he stood up, he patted Emma's head and dusted himself off one last time.

“Sure.”

Emma shot him a warning glare. “Idiot, you’ll put her in danger.”

Not wanting to lose the opportunity, I immediately assured her with a smile. “Don't worry. I am not that stupid.”

Resolved to carry out his plan, Louis asked, “Abigail, at this moment, what's the thing that you are craving for the most?”

“Cigarettes,” I replied without a second’s hesitation. Yes, it was an awful habit, but sometimes it was the only thing that would work to calm my nerves.

He smirked in amusement. “Cool.”

Louis sauntered over the guards who stood at attention on his arrival. “Do you have cigarettes?” He gazed over them.

Bowing, they shook their head politely. “No, your highness. We apologize.”

“Oh dear, I left my pack in my room. Could you bring me some?” Louis asked.

One of the guards immediately turned and rushed up the stairs to retrieve what the prince had requested. Louis looked pointedly at the remaining guard while shoving his hands into his pockets.

“Yeah… I am going to need a lighter too.”

“I am sorry, your highness. I’ll go fetch one for you immediately.”

Damn… this prince was impressive! He made both of them disappear in a split second just to give me the chance to escape. I seriously liked how his mind worked. After the last guard left, Louis took a box out of his pocket and turned to me. He was holding a cigarette box and delight lit my face.

“Abigail, here are your cigarettes,” he said, tossing the box to me.

When I jumped and caught it, he smirked. “You got two minutes to find yourself the fire. Good luck.” And without another word, he walked past me and sat down beside Emma.

“Thank you.”

I shoved the cigarettes into my pocket, grabbed my backpack, and wasted no time running out of that damn dungeon.
