Chapter 1

At the hospital, I waited for news about my mother, hoping she was fine or if anything had happened to her. Several hours ago, my mom fell down the stairs and was taken to the hospital. There was a fear in my heart that something terrible had happened to her. My younger sister, Stacy, 17, was with me. I am 21 years old. Due to financial constraints, I wasn’t able to attend college. Although I wanted to leave, my family is already deeply in debt, and I couldn’t abandon them. We were just three: me, my sister, and my mother. Nevertheless, this is not a narrative about my destitute family. In this narrative, I tell the story of how a mafia leader named Joshua Winter blindsided me and convinced me to make a deal with him. I’ll get started with the story now. Stacy walked to the vending machine to buy a cup of coffee. I sat outside the room where my mother was. “Hey, sis, do you want a cup?” Stacy remarked as she took a cup from me. “You know I don’t like vending machine coffee,” I remarked. "Come on, it’s good,” said Stacy. She took another sip from her coffee cup and seemed to be reaching the end of her patience. Her expression indicated otherwise. “I believe I’ll pass,” I admitted. “You’re a loser,” Stacy responded with a snort of laughter before taking another sip from her coffee cup. A brown-haired woman approached us and introduced herself as Doctor Mary. “Hello Dr. Mary, is our mother, OK?” I asked. “I’m going to come right to the point with you,” she replied. “We noticed a lump in her breast, and we want to run some tests on it right away.” “She has cancer,” Stacy said. Her statement made me understand that my mother, who worked two jobs to provide for me and my sister and had fallen painfully, was diagnosed with cancer. “Can we see her?” I asked. “Unfortunately, we believe it is best for her not to see anyone for a week because she has been in a lot of pain as a result of the fall,” said Dr. Mary. I didn’t like the notion of not being able to visit my mum for a week. But as my older sister, I had to act strong in front of her and pretend that everything was okay when I wanted to scream myself hoarse. “All right, please take excellent care of her,” I told the doctor. Stacy and I walked home from the hospital since my mother are the only one who has a car, and I don’t know how to drive. “Do you think she’ll be okay?” Stacy inquired. “I believe she will battle through this,” I added. Rain began to fall from the storm, soaking us all. “No, no, no!” screamed Stacy “What’s the matter?” I asked. “I got my new crop top from Connor wet,” Stacy said as she ran to hide behind a building. “Are you kidding me?” I said as I rushed beside her. “I’m not going to get wet again, so you can go if you want,” Stacy responded. “Are you sure?” I inquired. “I’ll call Connor or Sally,” she says. “I had a party with Sofia that I had to attend,” I said. “Get going or you’ll be late.” Stacy remarked. I dashed to my house and quickly got dressed, sticking to a dress that Sofia had told me would look good at the party. She said that she wanted me to look nice for the famous person who would be there. I was wearing an old dress from high school with short, puffed sleeves, gleaming shoes from Stacy’s closet and a pretty necklace from my grandmother. After I put on my dress, I waited under my porch outside and waited for Sofie. She had been my friend since middle school, and she didn’t make jokes about me. When we arrived at the party, there were lights beaming from the house and people screaming and running to a person that was very hard to see. “Who are they running to?” I asked. “The famous people I was talking about,” Sofie said. “Who is that?” I asked with a puzzled face. “Joshua Winter.” Sofia exclaimed loudly in my ear. “The famous actor with that hot face,” I said. “I know, he has a pretty hot face,” Sofie remarked. “Let’s go inside,” says Sofie remarked. I said, “I’m going to wait for the mob to disperse first.” “OK, promise not to die.” Sofie remarked. After a few seconds, the throng became thicker, and I chose to stroll about rather than go inside. When I began wandering around the house for a bit, I felt someone was following me. When I turned around, no one was there. When I began walking ahead, I bumped into someone and when I glanced up, I saw Joahua Winter with his hot steamy face. I realized that I was in big trouble after I saw a man worth millions of billions of dollars. “I’m very sorry,” I said. “If I had known who you were or watched where I was going, I may have been more aware.” Joshua stared at my face for a long time without saying anything. Eventually, he spoke: “How old are you and what is your name? "I was puzzled by his question. “I’m not sure why you want to know,” I explained. “You either tell me or I find out,” Joshua remarked in a seductive tone that made me feel sexual. “My name is Scarlett,” I replied. But I had seen every movie about a girl who throws her life away for a male, only to receive nothing but misery in return. “Scarlett who?” Joshua asked me. “None of your business,” I said, but he tightened his grip on my arm. A shiver ran down my spine as I looked into those beautiful eyes that everyone thinks of, but when I looked into them, they were dark and evil—something I had never seen before. "I can make you wealthy,” Joshua said. “I don’t need money,” I muttered as I tried to get his fingers away from my arm. “How are you going to deal with your mother and the debt your family has?” Joshua asked. “How did you figure it out?” I asked. “I know a lot of things, but I’m not here to discuss your sad family,” Joshua added. “We aren’t poor; we just had a bit of a financial setback, but we can handle it,” I explained, trying to keep my family safe. “All right, but I’m here to make you a deal,” Joshua explained. “What type of bargain are you talking about?” I asked. “Well,” he said, “you have to marry me.”
