The Story Behind The Story
I've always been interested in the true story of Halifax, so it's only natural I feel compelled to create a story about it.
The Halifax Explosion was a devastating event that took place December 6th, 1917, when two ships collided in the harbour.
One ship was a munitions ship, carrying a cargo of 62 metric tons of guncotton, 246 metric tons of benzol, 250 metric tons of TNT, and 2,367 metric tons of picric acid.
The impact damaged benzol barrels stored on deck and leaking vapours ignited by sparks from the collision, set off a fire on board that quickly grew out of control. Twenty minutes later it exploded, creating the largest man made explosion, until the atomic bomb. It released the equivalent energy of roughly 2.9 kilotons. 1 square mile of the city was flattened from the force of the blast.
Nearly 2,000 people were killed, 9,000 more were injured, and more than 25,000 were left without adequate housing.
