Chapter 1: "The Liberation of The Netherlands"
Sophie squinted at the light suddenly filling her cell. The smell of mold was replaced by the smell of rain and grass, something she never thought she’d smell again. There was someone at her side, lifting her up and carrying her out. Their voice was soothing and Sophie stopped fighting the darkness at the edges of her vision. Matthew felt Sophie slump up in his arms and his heart dropped. He could distantly hear his voice screaming for someone to help. His world narrowed down to the skeletal figure in his grasp. She looked so different than before, proud stance wiped away in the few years since their last encounter, he felt two people gripping onto Sophie and taking her away from Matthew, a third person wrestling his struggling form, shouting at him to calm down. Matthew was being illogical, he knew that, but this was Sophie; a woman he admired so much, a woman he cared about more than anyone, a woman he might love. He eventually wore himself, relaxing in the persons arms. Soft lullabies were sung into his hair as the last of his energy seeped out. He recognised the songs, but it didn’t make sense.
“Amélia?” -It was quiet, but the hand on his back stopped moving showing that the other was listening.
“Yes, Maple?” –Amélia said with the softest voice she could.
“Why are you here?”
“I’m here with Oliver.” –That’s all she offered, the hand resuming it’s path, signifying the end of the conversation.
“Can I see her?” –Matthew asked with a tired voice.
He felt Amélia nod and he stood up on shaking legs. He was guided towards the tent, Amélia stopped at the entrance to speak to a very tired Noah before they were ushered through. Sophie was still unconscious, wrapped in bandeges and covered up with a quilt. Oliver was at her side, wiping sweat from her forehead. He looked up when he heard them approach, stepping away and nodding at Amélia.
“We’ll give you a minute.” –Oliver patted Matthew on the shoulder before departing, Amélia and Indilá in tow. Matthew took a few quiet steps towards the bed and sat down in the chair next to it. He hesitated before reaching out and grabbing Sophie's hand. He hung his head, trying to push away tears.
“I was so worried about you when I heard the news. I’m sorry it took me five years to save you. I should’ve fought harder.” –A few stray tears made their way down his face.
*A few days later*
A few days later, on the 9th of May, the doctors said something that made everyone even more worried about Sophie, but it also made Matthew furious.
“Her wounds are very serious. If you didn’t save her when you did, she wouldn’t be alive. We don’t even know if she’ll even wake up.” –The doctor said with a concerned voice.
No one said a word, they were all speechless. Noah and Zoé were heartbroken, scared that they might lose their older sister, they were crying their eyes out. Indilá hugged them both, she tried to calm them both down, but it wasn’t work. But Matthew, when he heard that, he didn’t say a word, he was scared that he might lose the woman he loved so much before he could tell her how he feels, he was also furious at Oliver for not helping Sophie, Noah and Zoé sooner and at Wilhem for doing this to Sophie and with that something in him broke. He was furious and he couldn’t think straight, and he went to have “a word” with Wilhem, but what no one knew was that Matthew wanted Wilhem dead. When Matthew got to Berlin and once he found Wilhem; who was talking with Joseph. Matthew knew that they didn’t know that Matthew was there and then Matthew spoke.
“Why, hello there. Joseph, you’re not supposed to be here, because last time I checked the Soviet Union is with the Allies not with the Axis Powers. So care to explain why you’re here?” –Matthew said with a mischievous voice.
“”What are you doing here Matthew?!?” –Joseph said with a confused voice.
“J-Ja, what are you doing here Matthew?”
“I’m here to have a word with Wilhem.”
“Are you going to join the Axis Powers?” –Wilhem said with an excited voice.
“No, it’s about something else, well more like about someone else.”
“W-What are you talking about Matthew?”
“D-Da, Matthew?”
“Joseph can you leave the room for a moment? I need to have a word with Wilhem alone.”
Joseph left the room to Wilhem's fury. Matthew was furious at Wilhem, and Wilhem knew Matthew was upset at him but didn’t know why.
“You… almost killed her!” –Matthew said with an angry voice.
“Almost killed who? I almost killed a lot of people.”
“You almost killed Sophie; your niece!” –Matthew said with fury in his voice.
“Almost killed Sophie, but how? She’s supposed to be dead! How is she even alive?” –Wilhem said with a confused and surprised voice.
When Matthew heard these words, something in him broke, again. He grabbed Wilhem by the throat and gave him the worst death glare of his life. Wilhem knew he just fucked up, he knew that he might die that day. Matthew started to beat the life out of Wilhem. He didn’t care anymore, to him, Wilhem had to suffer. When Matthew finally stopped, Wilhem was barely conscious. Then Matthew called Joseph to come back in the room, and he used magic to control Joseph to shoot Wilhem in the head, Matthew also used magic to clean the blood off of him. A few minutes later, Matthew went back to where he was staying in Amsterdam. He then found out that Sophie was moved to an an actual hospital, and he also learned that Sophie's condition worsened. He still wasn’t in the right state of mind, so he waited till the next day to see Sophie. Until then Matthew was in his room, sitting on his bed, thinking and trying to calm down. He didn’t know how Sophie's condition got worse in such little time when she was doing okay just before he left. He decided to get some sleep, he knew Joseph would tell Oliver and Indilá about what happened, but Matthew knew that they wouldn’t believe him.
*The next day*
It was the next day, Matthew was very tired but he was calm enough and he decided to go and see Sophie. When he got to the specific hospital, he was stopped by his father and Indilá. They told him what Joseph told them.
“Bounjour Mattie.” –Indilá greeted Matthew with a soft voice since she saw that Matthew looked tired.
“Hello Matthew” –Oliver greeted Matthew with a very British accent.
“Hello father. Bounjour Indilá” –Matthew greeted Oliver and Indilá with a tired voice.
“We need to talk to you, Mattie.” –Indilá said with a worried but soft voice.
“Yes, it’s very important!” –Oliver said with a strict voice.
“Sure, what do you need?” –Matthew said with a tired voice.
“Where did you go yesterday, Mattie?” –Indilá said with the softest but concerned voice.
“I went to a hotel here in Amsterdam, I needed to go and calm myself. I’m still worried about Sophie and I couldn’t sleep because of it. Why? What did Joseph tell you?” –Matthew lied to Oliver and Indilá, because he knew Joseph told Oliver and Indilá what he had done.
“He told us that you went to Berlin, tortured Wilhem and used magic to control him to kill Wilhem” –Oliver said with a stern voice.
“Oliver, I refuse to believe that mon chéri had done such a horrible thing.”
–Indilá snapped at Oliver.
“I would never do such a thing, I was never in Berlin!” –Matthew lied to them again and he also tried to defend himself.
“I told you our Mattie would never do such a horrid thing. How dare you accuse Mattie. How do we know that Joseph wasn’t the one who tortured and killed Wilhem! HUH OLIVER!” –Indilá yelled at Oliver with and pissed off voice. “Mon chéri, let me show you to where Sophie is.” –Indila said with a soft voice.
Matthew thanked Indilá and said goodbye to his father. Indilá took Matthew to the hospital room Sophie was in, there was a doctor in the room making sure she’s okay. The doctor left the room when they saw Matthew entering the room, leaving Matthew alone with Sophie. Matthew walked over to the bed and sat on it. He hesitated before reaching out and grabbing Sophies hand. He was worried about Sophie, the doctors said that there was a low chance of Sophie waking up and Matthew knew that this was hard for Noah and Zoé. All they could do was pray that Sophie would live.
*Two weeks later*
Two weeks passed and Sophie still wasn’t awake. Everyone was starting to lose hope, well until May 19th. Matthew went to check on Sophie, like he did for the past two weeks. A few minutes later, Matthew grabbed Sophie's hand and he held her hand in his. An hour later, Matthew wasn’t paying attention to anything around him since he was tired, when he felt Sophie gripped her hand, and he looked up to the face of the woman in the bad. Her emerald green eyes were blinking slowly, adding to the dazed look in her eyes. Matthew was so happy to see that Sophie had finaly woken up.
“M-Matthew?” –Sophie said with a dazed yet soft voice.
“Sophie, you’re finally awake! I’m so glad you’re awake! I was so worried about you. I’m so sorry it took me 5 years to save you.” –Matthew said with an excited but at the same time worried voice.
“H-How l-long w-was I-I u-unconscious f-for?” –Sophie asked with a confused and dazed voice.
“That doesn’t matter now! What is the last thing you remember?” –Matthew asked with a concerned and worried voice.
“W-Well t-the l-last t-thing I r-remem-remember is t-that t-there was s-someone by my s-side, they c-carried me out of th-the cell a-and I r-remember f-fainting in t-their arms. T-Then t-the next t-thing I knew I w-woke up in a h-hospital?” –Sophie said with a dazed yet shaking voice. She could barely speak.
“Did you see their face?” –Matthew asked with a curious voice.
“I d-did see t-their face, but it’s blurry. I can only guess that the person was you.” –Sophie said with a now tired voice.
“I mean you’re not wrong.” –Mattew said with a surprised voice.
“T-Thank you”
“H-Huh?”
“T-Thank you for saving my siblings and keeping them safe.” –Sophie thanked Matthew with a dazed and tired yet thankful voice.
Matthew and Sophie talked for a few minutes. Matthew told Sophie what happened after she passed out, Sophie didn’t know what to say. She was relieved to know Wilhem wouldn’t ever bother anyone ever again. They talked for a long time. Sophie didn’t know what happened to her siblings.
“H-How a-are my s-siblings?” –Sophie asked with a worried voice.
“Well, they’re both very busy. Zoé is trying to fix Luxembourg's economy and she helps Noah when she can, and Noah is very busy trying to be in charge of two countries.”
“W-What do y-you mean ‘trying to be in charge’ of two countries?” –Sophie asked with a confused voice.
“Well, since you were unconscious for a month. Noah decided himself to take your place as the ruler of the Netherlands until you recover.”
“I want to see my siblings”
“They’re over in the palace. They’ve been very worried about you, my father and Indilá barely convinced them to go back to the palace so that they could get some rest because they haven’t left your side since you were brought to the hospital. I can go get them if you want?”
“Can you go get them?”
“Of course, I’ll be back later.”
Matthew went to go get Noah and Zoé at the Royal Palace. Once he got to the palace, he went to go get Noah first. He went to the office where Noah was. Matthew knocked on the door frame surprising Noah.
“Matthew! What are you doing here? Is Sophie okay?” –Noah asked with a worried voice.
“Don’t worry Noah, Sophie’s doing just fine.” –Matthew said with a softer, reassuring voice.
“Then why are you here?”
“Well, I have good news.”
“What are the good news?”
“Soph’s awake!”
“SOPHIE’S AWAKE!” –Noah yelled with an excited voice.
“I’m gonna go tell Zoé, you can go see Sophie.”
“Matthew, can I tell Zoé that Soph’s awake?”
“Sure. I’ll do some work.”
“Okay see you later!”
Matthew went to do his work, while Noah went to tell Zoé the good news. Noah ran to Zoé's room, he went into Zoé's room without knocking. Zoé was upset at Noah for going into her room without knocking.
“Noah, what the hell is so important that you have to come in my room without knocking!”
“It’s about Sophie!”
“Is Sophie okay?!?”
“Yes, she’s better than okay!”
“What do you mean?”
“Sophie’s awake!”
“Why are you standing there! Go see Sophie! I’ll be there in a few minutes”
“Okay, see you later!”
Noah was running to hospital where Sophie was. He was glad that Sophie was finally awake, everyone was worried about her, especially himself, Matthew and Zoé. He wanted to hug his older sister. Once he got to the hospital and the room Sophie was in, Noah hesitated before opening the door. When he opened the door he ran to his sister and hugged her. Sophie was glad to see her younger brother but he was hugging her too tight and she couldn’t breathe properly.
“I’M SO HAPPY YOU’RE AWAKE!” –Noah yelled with an excited voice.
“I-I’m h-happy t-to s-see y-you t-too, b-but y-you’re h-hugging m-me t-too t-tight”
“Oh, sorry. I was so worried about you and I got a bit too excited that you’re finally awake.”
“It’s fine, I don’t mind you hugging me… just don’t hug me so tightly.”
“I know, I just got too excited; so much so that I forgot that you’re still injured.”
“It’s okay.”
Noah and Sophie talked for a few minutes before they heard someone run into the door. When they looked at the door, they saw that it opened, and they saw Zoé coming into the room. Zoé ran to the bed, but before she could hug Sophie too tightly Noah stopped Zoé.
“Can you chill?”
“B-But?”
“No buts Zoé! Sophie only woke up today and she’s still injured, so you need to be careful with her!” –Noah scolded Zoé
“Right, I’m sorry. Sophie, how do you feel right now?” –Zoé asked with a worried voice.
“I’m tired and my body’s in pain, but I’ll be fine.” –Sophie said with a reassuring but tired and drained voice.
“Sophie if you’re tired you should rest.” –Noah said with stern yet worried voice.
“Ja big sis, you need rest.” –Zoé spoke with a worried voice.
“I agree Soph, you need to rest” –Matthew said as he came into the room.
“Matthew I forgot you were here!” –Noah said with a startled voice.
“Noah, Zoé, I think you should let Sophie get some rest.” –Oliver spoke with strict voice.
“Oui, you both still have a lot of work to do!” –Indilá said with a scolding voice.
“Indilá, when did you get here?!” –Noah yelled at Indilá.
“I heard that Sophie regained consciousness so I came to check on her and see how she is doing.” –Indilá spoke with a soft voice.
“Matthew is right, we should let Sophie rest. And you three have a lot of work to do! Noah you have two countries that you’re in charge of, and that comes with a lot of work. Zoé you have to fix Luxembourg's economy and that is a lot of work! And Matthew, you have to do the work I gave you!” –Oliver said with a bossy voice.
“Actually, Oliver I already did the work you gave me. Noah does have a lot of work to do, that’s true, but Sophie just woke up and Noah and Zoé want to spend time with her. Noah and Zoé can do their work later!” –Matthew said with a sassy voice.
Oliver was pissed off and he grabbed Indilá and they left the hospital. All four of them laughed. Matthew told Sophie to get some rest and then he left. Noah and Zoé sat down next to Sophie, since Sophie had a hard time falling asleep. Zoé grabbed some painkillers and gave them to Sophie, Sophie took the painkiller and fell asleep quickly. Noah and Zoé didn’t want to leave Sophie alone in her room. Both of them were very tired, but they tried not to fall asleep. Matthew didn’t leave the hospital, he stayed outside Sophies hospital room to guard it. Noah and Zoé didn’t want to leave Sophie all alone. Noah and Zoé knew that this was their fault and they still didn’t know why Sophie still cared about them even after they willingly surrendered to the Germans knowing that Sophie surrendered for them to be free. They both felt so guilty for not helping their older sister, they knew if their parents were still alive and if they knew what happened, they would be so disappointed at them. Noah and Zoé stayed up all night making sure that Sophie didn’t have anymore nightmares and making sure she was okay. It was the next day and time for Noah and Zoé to leave, at least for an hour or two. But they didn’t want to leave their sister. Evan tried to tell them that Sophie will be fine, and he told them that they just needed to leave for an hour. Noah and Zoé hesitated but they left and they told him that they would be back in an hour and that they would bring Sophie breakfast.
“Okay, we’ll leave. But we will be back in an hour! And we’ll bring Sophie breakfast. Isn’t that right Noah?” –Zoé spoke with a stern but quiet voice.
“Ja Evan! We’ll bring Sophie breakfast in an hour! And we will make sure she eats a lot because she hasn’t eaten proper food in five years.” –Noah spoke with quiet but worried voice.
“That’s a good idea Noah! But please come back in an hour. I promise you both that Sophie will be fine. I will make sure of it!” –Evan spoke with a soft but quiet voice.
“Alright, but if I find out that you didn’t do that I will beat the life out of you! Do you understand Evan! I’m sure Zoé will help me, right Zoé?” –Noah said with an annoyed voice.
“Yes, we’ll make sure she eats a lot! But if something happens to our older sister, I promise you that we will beat the living shit out of you! Do you understand” –Zoé said with a slight anger in her voice, but a smile on her face.
Evan was scared a bit of what they might do to him. He tried to reassure them that Sophie will be fine and luckily for him they listened.
“I’ll make sure that Sophie is okay. You don’t need to worry.” –Evan tried to reassure Noah and Zoé.
“Alright, but if we hear that something happened-” –Zoé was cut of by Evan.
“Don’t worry. I; myself will make sure nothing bad happens to Sophie. Now go back to the palace, eat something, relax a bit or read a book, do some work then come back.” –Evan tried to reasure Zoé.
“Fine! Let’s go Noah” –With that Noah and Zoé left.
Evan went to check on Sophie; who was now awake and confused about where her sibling went. Then Evan walked in, Sophies confusion didn’t end and so she asked Evan where her sibling went. Evan walked over to sit down next to Sophie.
“H-Hey E-Evan! Where did my siblings go?” –Sophie asked with a confused and dazed voice.
“I told them to go back to the palace, so that they could eat something and so that they could rest for a bit. You don’t need to worry, they’re fine.” –Evan tried to reassure Sophie, he had more luck reassuring Sophie because she was more reasonable than her younger siblings.
“When will they come back?” –Sophie asked Evan with a soft voice.
“They will be back in an hour at least. You should also get more rest.” –Evan spoke with a soft and reassuring voice.
“A-Are you sure? What if they get hurt!? What if they get kidnapped-” –Sophie was panicking but she was cut off by Evan.
“Sophie, look at me and listen!” –Evan spoke with a now louder and stern voice.
Sophie was caught off guard. She stopped talking and just looked at Even. Sophie tried to calm down, but she couldn’t.
“They’re fine Sophie. Now try to relax. Noah and Zoé are fine, they are back at the palace, eating breakfast or doing some work. And if you ask how I know that, Indilá went with them to make sure that they safely got to the palace and she sent word that they safely got the palace. So you don’t need to worry, now try to calm down and relax. I don’t want to get murdered by Noah and Zoé.” –Evan spoke with a now calm and softer voice.
“Okay, but when they come back please tell me.” –Sophie spoke with a soft but quiet voice.
“Don’t worry, I will. Calm down and relax, I have to make sure that you’re in a stable state since you only regained consciousness yesterday.” –Even spoke with a soft voice.
“Alright. But can you at least tell me what happened while I was unconscious?” –Sophie asked.
“I’m sorry, but I can not. You aren’t stable enough for that yet. Now can you breath in and out slowly.” –Evan spoke, trying not to answer Sophies question.
Sophie did what Evan asked her to do. And this continued for almost two hours. Sophie was waiting for her siblings to come back, she barely spoke a word to Evan; who had been trying to keep Sophie company. A few minutes later Noah and Zoé came back to see their older sister. Noah knocked on the door frame while Zoé was holding a picnic basket. Evan and Sophie looked at the door, and Sophie was happy to see her siblings. Evan stood up and walked out of the room, leaving Noah and Zoé alone with Sophie. Noah and Zoé walked over to the bed Sophie was laying in, Noah helped Sophie sit up in the bed while Zoé set the picnic basked on the table next to the bed. Noah and Zoé sat down on the bed next their older sister. Zoé took out some food out of the basket and gave it to Sophie, she took out some more food and gave it to Noah, then she took out some more food for herself. Sophie took a few bites of the food, so did Noah and Zoé. The three of them talked for the rest of the day. It took Sophie almost a year to fully recover.
