Yukio
Tadpole Diaries II
Yukio
Name: Miwa Yukio
Power: Makes people reveal their deepest desires
I am laidback and I like to have fun. But if we are going to survive this, we going to need a little order. Somehow, I became the leader of our little group. I don’t know how. It just happened that way. No one objected to it and here we are.
Emily’s suicide has put so much into perceptive. We are in deep shit. There’s no nicer way of saying it. That’s just how it is. And it’s only going to get worse. I am only one man. I can’t do all of this alone. So, I am going to need people to lead with me. One per age group will do just fine.
I took the liberty of looking over the tadpole files with Kishitani-sensei. (Shinra, of course. His dad is an asshole.)
“What exactly are you looking for?” he asked.
“There’s just something I have to see,” I said. Shinra didn’t ask questions. I looked through the files on the computer. Let’s see… Not counting the dead ones, there are thirty-one of us right now. Eighteen more are still uncounted for. There are three generations of us. Erina, Itori-chan, Hifumi, Midori, Riku, Shuichi, Madoka, Saori, Naoki, and Miya are in the same age group as me. Taishi, Chie, and the twins are older. Everyone is younger. Okay, I could work with this.
First, each generation was going to need someone to lead them. There was me for the second generation. The first and third needed someone. It didn’t take me long to make my selections.
I pulled out my phone.
Chie and Mikado met up at my place. We all sat in the kitchen. Itori-chan was out at a job interview.
“Thank you for coming here,” I said.
“What is this about?” Chie-san asked.
“I have done some thinking,” I said. “And I think our age groups will need someone to guide them.” I looked at Chie-san and Mikado.
“Which is why you are here,” I said. Mikado didn’t look surprised. Chie-san’s face looked so pale.
“Why me?” she asked. “Wouldn’t Taishi or Haru be a better choice?”
“Yes, but I don’t want them,” I said. “I want you.” Mikado stared at me, but I put up my hand.
“She needs this,” I said. I turned my attention back to Chie-san.
“Don’t you want to take back your life?” I asked. She pressed her lips together and lowered her eyes.
“We are all fighting them here,” I said. “We have to do this together.”
“Miwa,” Mikado said.
“Shut it,” I said. Chie-san trembled in her seat. Was she about to cry?
“I understand you are upset,” I said. “Think of this as additional therapy. You’ve been doing so good around here.”
“But that’s different,” she said. “You’re all like me.”
“What about K-sensei?” I asked.
“I can’t feel his emotions,” Chie-san said a trembling voice. I looked confused.
“What?” I asked. She shook her head.
“I don’t know how or why either,” she said. Mikado and I looked at each other. Okay, this was different.
I remember the first time my powers awoke. This happened around January eleventh. I rue the day that I heard his voice again. I wasn’t having a good morning then. I woke up with a swimming headache. I wanted to go back to sleep. What all happened last night?
Okay… Last night was great.
I turned and looked behind me. Long light brown hair stood out in the dim light. Through the pain, I smiled. Oh yeah. I met this little honey bun at a bar in Ginza. She was looking for some action and I was happy to oblige. (What can I say? How could I say no to a sexy lady?) She came over to me and offered to buy me a drink. I offered to buy her one in return.
My thoughts were interrupted when I heard her waking up. She rolled over with a smile on her face.
“Morning,” she said. I think my eyes were watering as I smiled at her.
“Good morning,” I said through clenched teeth. She lifted her head with a concerned look on her face.
“Are you feeling okay?” she asked.
“No,” I admitted. I climbed out of bed and walked over to the bathroom.
“Yukio-kun?” that honey bun asked. I closed the bathroom behind me.
The rest of the day was a nightmare. I didn’t want to remember my time back at Chou Mori. But they came back in 4K. I ended up going back home early from my job. When I got back to my apartment, I collapsed onto the couch and went to sleep.
I wanted to die.
Around three in the afternoon, it happened.
I woke up on the couch when I heard two people yelling outside. Huh? Who was that? My legs felt like jelly as I dragged myself to the door. I leaned against the cool surface as I looked through the peephole. There was a woman and someone as I thought was her boyfriend were yelling at each other. Well, she was doing most of the yelling. I didn’t feel like putting up with this. I opened my door and poked my head outside.
“Excuse me,” I spoke up. The couple looked up.
“I am not feeling so good,” I said. “Could you please keep it down?” There was a pause. The girl glared at me with so much hate in her eyes.
“Why don’t you mind your damn business?!” she screamed. She looked like she was ready to charge at me. I could already picture how this was going down. I needed to do something fast.
I don’t know why I did what I did next. It just kind of happened.
“What exactly do you want?” I asked. The woman suddenly froze. She had a dreamy daze in eyes as she had a cute little smile on her face.
“I want… to go on a romantic trip to Ginzan Onsen,” she said as if in a trance.
“You’ve got to be kidding me,” her boyfriend complained. “I don’t have that kind of money!” The woman spun around on her heel.
“You never take me out anywhere nice!” she wailed.
“I told you that my job doesn’t pay that much!” he shouted back.
“It’s always the same excuse with you! I bet you have plenty of money to spend on that slut you work with!” that woman yelled. Her ponytail swung wildly back and forth as she talked. Her boyfriend threw his hands up in the air.
“I told you that I’m not interested in her!” he said. “I only love you!”
“Liar!” she screamed. At this point, I ducked back into the apartment and closed the door behind me. What just happened? All I did was ask her what she wanted and she spaced out on me. Weird…
And wouldn’t you know? My phone rang on the floor. I should not have answered it.
“Hello?” I asked.
“Hello Shounen Yu,” that bastard said on the other line. “Congratulations on your awakening.”
