Prologue
Avril trudged home along the wet, muddy path. The mud squished under his boots. A long fight between the Knights of Longford and the hundreds of outsiders had worn him down. These fights occurred every week, but never had one of these battles been so intense as the one that ended not one hour earlier. The Knights of Longford had managed to gain control of the outsiders and drove them back, outside the Longford border. After that, Avril and some of the other commanders and captains headed to Chiliad Brewery, located on the edge of the second largest village in Longford. Chiliad was a decently sized village and was the main producer of homemade alcohol in Longford. Everyone came to Chiliad for liquor. Avril and some of the other Captains and Commanders sat down to discuss their next course of action. So far, they were all unsure of the next attack point for the outsiders, but they suspected it would be close to the Eastern Company which was a residential area for people who went to Longford but had no place to live. After a few drinks the men said their farewells and each headed off in their own direction. Captain Ross headed north to Wickerstead where his family and hometown was. Captain Dane went south with Avril to Chiliad and from there he went west to his hometown, Provlin, and Commanders Briton and Keys headed east to their homes in Eastern Company.
Avril held a fairly high ranking as a commander and was quite well known among most of the Knights of Longford. His talent with a sword was higher than most, and therefore he was selected for most of the fights that involved outsiders. He had only been a First Lieutenant when he was promoted by the King of Longford to Commander. This gave him more freedom and he moved with his wife from Eastern Company to Chiliad. Around three months later and the outsider attacks became more ferocious, forcing the King of Longford to increase Avril’s defence by three hundred warriors. The attacks began to get so serious that the King gave Avril access to anything he needed. Avril chose to once again increase his defence, but began to form an offensive plan. At the next attack, instead of all his warriors staying on the outskirts of Chiliad, he took half of his men with him into the surrounding forests and waited. Three days later another attack began, but Avril was going to crush them this time. He waited for the outsiders to clear the path that led to Chiliad and attacked them from behind, wiping them out before they reached the outskirts. Avril was praised by all the Knights of Longford for his brave and smart move, and was given charge of border guard. His job was now to keep the outsiders away from Longford’s border. But on one attack from the outsiders, multiple had been able to sneak past the patrol, killing them in the process. They made their way to Chiliad’s gates and climbed the walls, slipping past the guards, and went into Avril’s barracks where they caught him, and killed him. News of the great warrior’s death spread fast and it wasn’t long before everyone in Longford had heard about it. Once the tragic news reached Avril’s wife, Elizabeth, she broke into tears. She had just given birth to two sons, Dalton and Avril Jr. She took it upon herself to care and raise the boys as best she could, but after three years the weight of stress buried her. She left the boys standing in front of a door with a sign that read, Chiliad Orphanage. She then knocked on the door, and ran.
