Chapter 1

•Dionne POV•

The lights in the bathroom were bright and clinical as I stared at myself in the mirror. I was in the middle of washing my hands when I got distracted by my own reflection and found myself letting the warm water run over my still hands for far longer than I should have. I couldn't help it; it was like, for a second, there was a stranger in the glass staring back at me, and I just had to analyse her face curiously. But no, it was just me - with a bit more makeup on than I'm used to, my curly hair far more styled than usual, and a decent amount of alcohol already in my system. The nights barely even started and I'm already at that 'existential bathroom checkpoint' part that happens to us all.

It happens to us all, right?

I was brought out of it, though, by the sound of frantic knocking on the door that brought me right back to reality. My ears tuned back in to the sound of 'It's Getting Hot in Here' blasting from the other room, and my friend outside the bathroom door yelling at me to "hurry the fuck up or I'm gonna piss myself!"

I shook myself back into my body and quickly dried my hands, drying my hands and giving my cheeks a few quick slaps to... I don't know, to hype myself up? I checked my reflection one more time, adjusting my facial expression and letting out a breath. I scrunched my curls up, pointlessly smoothing over the two plaits that were framing my face and then looked down at the short black dress clinging to my body, tugging it down slightly and nodding to myself. Here we go.

"Jesus, girl, took you long enough!" My friend blurted out the minute I opened the door, stumbling through before I even got a chance to move and immediately occupying the toilet. No shame. "I thought I was gonna die out there." She huffed out, followed by the undeniable sound of peeing. Lovely.

"A bit dramatic, don't you think?" I cocked an eyebrow with a slight chuckle, about to leave the bathroom when I felt her grab the strap of my tiny little night out bag which was slung over my shoulder. I looked down at her, seeing she had her head propped upon her hand, elbow upon her knee and eyes shut tiredly. "God, Blaire, are you already that drunk?"

"You know I'm a lightweight, Dee. Don't judge me. Are you having fun, though?" She forced her eyes open to look at me with a dopey smile on her face, her hand moving from my bag strap to my hand which she gripped tightly, and I couldn't help but smile back. Even if I desperately wanted to leave this bathroom, this girl never failed to make me smile and laugh at the weirdest of times.

"I'm having fun, B." I nodded, pulling my hand from hers and patting the top of her head slightly, watching her eyes narrow slightly in response. "But I'll have a lot more fun when I'm no longer in this bathroom. You enjoy yourself, though."

Although Blaire groaned at me, I was quick to leave the bathroom, closing the door behind me and making my way to the kitchen. More alcohol definitely felt necessary. I was happy to see two more of my friends standing in the kitchen, although they were a bit distracted taking selfie's. The usual.

"When are we going out, bitches?!" I called out as I popped the lid off of a bottle of desperados and finally caught their attention.

"Dee! Come take selfie's!" Charlie begged, only looking away from the phone in her hand for a second before her and Sameera of course snapped another undoubtedly stunning picture. I took a long swig of my drink and shrugged. Hell, I may as well join in, considering that avoidance of the question definitely meant we wouldn't be going out for at least another twenty minutes.

-

"Who's getting the first round then?" Blaire called out excitedly as we entered our first club of the night.

"Blaire I think you should get us drinks and you get water!" I suggested with a smirk on my face, watching her scoff at my obviously provocative statement.

"Fuck off!" She laughed. "I actually think you should do it-"

"I was gonna say that actually!" Sameera piped in and I turned to her with a look of exaggerated betrayal. "You know, to celebrate... your new lease of life! You know?"

"When you put it like that, I think that's a great idea! First rounds on Dee!" Charlie grinned, and the other two traitors joined in with a cheer as we got closer to the bar.

"You guys are lucky I just got paid. Otherwise I'd be telling you all to go and suck a-"

"I'll have a vodka coke, alright, Dee?" Blaire cut me off smugly, and I rolled my eyes. I played up the bitter act, but really I was happy to get the night really going. We got our first rounds in, and stood by the bar to drink - we had this agreement, when we went clubbing, to always have a round, then shots, then buy another round and hit the dance floor. It was like some unspoken rule at this point. After that routine took place, it was like a free for all.

"So... how you feeling?" Sameera asked me suddenly, having to lean in close in order to even be heard in this busy environment.

"I'm feeling good. You?"

"Don't be so polite." She scoffed, and simply blew air out of my nose amused my before sipping on my rum and coke mixture. "You drinking drinking tonight?"

"Am I drinking drinking?"

"You know, like, getting drunk drunk?"

"Oh I'm getting drunk."

"Like, drunk drunk?"

"Oh I'm gonna get fucked up, girl." I let out a curt laugh, and Sameera did the same. I knew what she was actually getting at, but wanted to see if she'd come out with it at all. I wasn't actually planning to get all that drunk... I just thought it'd be funny to freak her out a little.

"You know..." she started, cautiously sipping at her cocktail as I smiled at her knowingly. "You know, I've read that it's quite common to be kind of self destructive after a breakup-"

"Oh, god Sameera, really-"

"I'm just looking out for you!"

"There's nothing to look out for! I'm fine, really - you guys can stop tip toeing around the subject now. I'm not gonna... destroy myself." I chuckled, downing the rest of my drink and turning back to the bar in wait of more service. "I think it's time for shots."

"Dee hold on-"

"Girls! Shots are on me!" I called out to the other two who were sitting on the opposite side of Sameera. I looked past her concerned face and held up my empty glass to Blaire and Charlie, who cheered in agreement with my announcement. "You're doing shots with us, right Sam?" I watched her face contort from concern to a reluctant smile, which only grew as Blaire suddenly grasped onto her shoulders, screaming the lyrics to whatever song was playing right in her ear.

-

Quite a few rounds of drinks and a lot of dancing in different clubs later, I found myself back at another bar. This time around, my vision was a bit more blurred, the music was pulsing through my system as consistently as the alcohol was; I was definitely not sober, and I found myself constantly moving to the rhythm of whatever song was playing - whether I knew it or not. 'It' being both the song playing and the fact that I couldn't stop moving, even when I was ordering more drinks. But now, as I stood at the bar waiting to recite my repetitive order once again, I was taken off guard by the bartender approaching me with a drink already in hand. It looked like my regular rum and coke. She pushed it over the sticky wooden counter to me, saying "for you" with a nod.

"Did I order this?" I asked in genuine, intoxicated curiosity. Who knows, maybe I did and immediately forgot? That wouldn't be a surprise.

"Actually, that young man over there did. For you." She smiled, leaning over the bar and pointing down to the other end of the bar. It felt like I had to put a strange amount of effort into leaning forward also, following her finger to my left and seeing there was in fact a young man in that direction. He had short, bright blue hair, dark eyes, and beautiful tan skin. And even from here, with my deteriorating eyesight and altered state of mind, I could tell that he... well, he was handsome. To put it simply.

"He got this- for me?" I asked, poking my hand into my own chest in surprise. She simply nodded, then turned away — assumedly to carry on with her work, you know. I found myself frozen when the young man, who had been chatting with a friend next to him, turned and looked directly at me... and then winked. Impulsively, my hand wrapped around the short glass full of rum and coke and I brought it to my lips. Without realising it, I'd downed half the glass, and when I looked back at the man... well, there was no man.

For a second I was really questioning how much alcohol I'd consumed - was I really drunk enough to hallucinate that whole thing? It's never happened before, but hey, there's a first time for everything. Then I remembered that I'd left my friends on the dance floor, so I turned around with my drink in my hand and started making my way back to wherever they were. They didn't actually like when I went off to get drinks on my own - you know, girl code, be safe and go together - but I doubt they'd even noticed I was gone. Especially not Blaire - she was basically blackout at this point-

"Hey there." A deep voice cut off my thoughts, as well as the feeling of a hand tapping on my shoulder. I instinctively turned to my right, my eyes falling first upon the plain black shirt clad chest directly in front of me before I dragged my eyes up to find that same smirking face from the end of the bar. Oh shit. He looks even more handsome up close, with those dark brown eyes staring deeply into mine.

"Hey yourself." I blurted back, biting the inside of my cheek with a coy smile to hide the slight awe that I was feeling.

"You liked the drink then?" He nodded at the half drank glass in my hand and I felt the heat rise in my cheeks. Should I be embarrassed by the fact that I'd downed half of it already?

"That obvious?" I chuckled, shuffling in my heels. What the hell am I doing? "Thank you, I mean."

"Hey, it's my pleasure." He leaned down to say right next to my ear, although he still had to raise his voice over the music, and I felt chills rush over me. His hand was resting on my upper arm - has it been there this whole time? What is going on- "You're fucking gorgeous, by the way." Holy shit.

"So that's why you got me the drink?" I responded, immediately wanting to punch myself. It's like my mouth was trying to scare him off.

"You could say that." He laughed lightly, leaning back a bit so that I could see his face again as I sipped my drink. He looked around for a moment before glancing back down at me and leaning in again. "Do you wanna dance?" He asked, and I was surprised to realise that I hadn't actually scared him off like I thought.

For a second I wanted to think about his suggestion, but when my weary eyes focused on his face - saw how close it was to mine, with his bottom lip pulled into his mouth, eyes looking at me so intently - and felt his hand brush over my wrist... it's like autopilot took over. I nodded with a grin, letting my hand slip into his before impulsively downing the rest of my drink and placing it on the bar that I luckily hadn't gotten too far away from. Then, with a burst of adrenaline, I was pulling him over to the dance floor behind me.

As soon as we got to where we were meant to be, his hands settled on my waist from behind and I couldn't help but smile. I tuned into the music, realising that whatever was playing was definitely the kind of music to have me doing messy shit by the end of the night. If you know what I mean. My body moved naturally to the music, completely aware of the presence right behind me; so close, in fact, that I felt my back pressing up against his broad chest as his hands drifted down to my hips that continued to move with his.

It felt like we'd been dancing like that forever when I turned around, instinctively running my hands up his torso until they wrapped around his neck. I don't know what was coming over me... Well, I did. A combination of alcohol and a very good looking man flirting with me would definitely do the trick. Although, saying that, I'd never acted like this before... I couldn't deny that - no matter how intoxicated I may be - I was certainly enjoying myself. Being able to see his face all of a sudden brought more excitement out of me, as I smiled up at him through my eyelashes and bit my lip.

His head lowered down to my ear once again, so close that I could feel his hot breath on my skin, and I shivered... He said nothing though, and instead brought a single hand up from where it rested on my hip and brushed it against my neck. My breath instantly caught in my throat, my body almost feeling numb apart from the feeling of his hand delicately moving to my jaw... My hand found it's way to the back of his head, feeling his soft hair under my fingers, as he used his own to slowly and carefully lift my chin...

Suddenly, I felt his lips touching the side of my jaw, along with the feeling that I was going to completely burst at the seams. It wasn't long until those lips, with my assistance, touched my own; and there we were. Two strangers, in the middle of the dance floor, barely moving anymore apart from our lips, wandering hands... and inevitably, our tongues. I was surprised by myself, but did nothing to put a stop to it. Why would I? I was having way too much fun. And it went on like that for a surprisingly long amount of time, until...

"Dionne!" A voice broke through my living fantasy. "Oh my fucking god-" the voice sounded shocked, but I continued in my state of bliss. That is, until a hand grasped my upper arm and tugged at me as if they were trying to pull me out of moving traffic. I disconnected from the handsome man in front of me, quickly glancing to my right and seeing Charlie was the one ruining the fun. "Come on!" She insisted, grabbing at my hand that had fallen away from the man's chest, and beginning to drag me away.

"Charlie, hey!" I protested, then turned to look at the man apologetically when I realised she wasn't listening - and was much stronger than me, undoubtedly. But when I looked at him, it was like another wave of adrenaline hit me; god, his face... He was licking his lips, that still had traces of my lipstick all over them, and... grinning. Like he'd achieved some sort of feat. His eyes drifted up and down my body as he brought his hand up to his mouth, wiping at his bottom lip with his thumb before he maintained eye contact with me whilst I was regretfully dragged away. Looking at him, though, I had to smile too; in fact, I found myself giggling, like I couldn't believe what I'd just done - hell, I couldn't. He looked like he wanted to follow me, too, but I simply gave him a look that - hopefully - said, "I'll be back".

"Dee are you listening to me??" I suddenly heard Charlie's voice, realised she'd been talking this whole time, and turned back around to face her as she continued to walk.

"Not at all." I giggled back, hearing her scoff.

"We've been looking for you forever! And you're over here making out with- with... some guy!" She said with exasperation, and I realised that I just could not stop giggling. I felt like a stupid little school girl.

"You guys told me to have fun!" At this point she was pulling me into the ladies toilets. "What time is it?"

"It's almost three in the morning!" She let out a slight laugh with this, but I gasped.

"Three in the morning? When did that happen-"

"Sometime in between you sneaking off for extra drinks and you finding a man to swap spit with." At this point she was standing by the sinks on her phone, and I'd turned to stare at myself in the mirror.

"He got me a drink, actually." I smiled to myself, giggling at the sight of my messy lipstick. I tried to wipe the excess off my lips before I pulled the lipstick out of my bag and did my best to fix up the mess I'd made. Well, I didn't do it singlehandedly... There goes another giggle.

"Lucky bitch." Charlie laughed. I knew she wasn't actually mad - she probably just got scared that I'd somehow found myself in a ditch or bush somewhere. Not tonight!

"Dee, you didn't!" Suddenly I heard the familiar voice of Sameera enter the bathroom at full force, and I turned around on my increasingly wobbly legs to see that Blaire had also stumbled into the crowded toilet area. "You did NOT!"

"I did what? I did not... what?" I furrowed my eyebrows, realising my words were slightly slurred at this point.

"You did not make out with some random ass guy! Yeah, Charlie texted us."

"No, I did do that." I nodded seriously, then laughed when I realised she wasn't being literal with her statement. "I totally did that!" And then I registered what she'd said- "Wait, Charlie, you seriously texted them?"

"Oh don't act so surprised, of course I told them." Charlie giggled, and I simply conceded. Yeah, that should not have been a surprise.

"Skip the bullshit guys! Was he hot?" Blaire's clammy hand clapped upon my shoulder, so hard that I almost stumbled over my own feet. I found myself glancing over at Charlie after I thought about Blaire's question, and saw her holding back a grin; I knew what she was thinking, and I knew that she knew what I was thinking. All of a sudden, there were giggles breaking out from the both of us - Blaire joined in, although I'm certain she had no idea why. That girl was gone. And Sameera still looked genuinely in shock.

"He was fucking gorgeous." I breathed out longingly. I bit my lip, realising I could still feel the sensation of his lips against mine, and his hands on my body... God, what a night.
