Field Trip

It was technically supposed to be a road trip. One week at Yosemite and six separate days of travel time three days there and back. Yeah, that didn't happen. That permission slip we were given a week to fill out? It was permission to take us away. Permanently.

"Alright, get on the bus," The bus driver was a beefy man stuffed into cargo pants and a collared shirt. He looked like a ghost slathered in no less than two bottles of sunscreen. Even though it was winter. I grabbed a seat in the back of the bus and hoped no one would see me.

I transferred to this school two weeks ago, and knowing the way typical school hierarchies work, it's a safe bet to say nobody knew me, and that's fine. I didn't need to know anyone but the people I draw

"Can I sit here? everywhere else is full," I looked up. A girl with lemon/lime streaked hair, orange eyes, and snowy skin was standing in the isle. She looked like a citrus sherbet, but I can't say anything. I'm albino, but I ended up with violet eyes instead of red or pink. "Sur-" the bus jerked to a start and the girl lurched forward. Instinct made me catch her. Nothing more. It took no less than five seconds for her to scramble into the seat next to me "I'm Yuki. Yuki Shoto. Who are you?" I gently eased my sketchbook out of my carryon. "...Blake, Blake Zuri," "Cool name. Do you use contacts to make you're eyes like that?" Yuri was inquisitive. A little too inquisitive. I turned away. "No." She seemed to recognize that it was a personal topic. "Sorry, I wasn't trying to be nosy," "Yeah, I know," I don't talk to people much, so I don't convey my emotions well. Not that I acknowledge them much.

It took another few hours to get to the first hotel, by then it was near midnight. I chose the room farthest away from the entrance. The rooms were all two person. Less rooms to purchase. I pulled my instant ramen out of my carryon. Yuki came to the door. "Hey, um..." She didn't appear to know where to start. "Yes," I answered the unasked question. She didn't say anything as she pulled her carryon inside. She pulled out a sandwich and began eating it. "You didn't bring sandwiches for the whole trip did you?" I asked. "Oh hell no, I just wanted something fresh for the first day. I have ramen too," Yuki finished her sandwich and got ready for bed.

A while after we had both got into our respective beds Yuki said "Are you still awake?"

"Yeah"

"So you don't like being around other people either?"

"What do you mean 'either' you're about the most social person I've willingly interacted with,"

"...I guess...you looked friendly enough,"

"'Friendly enough' huh? Alright well, good night Yuki."

The same seating and room arrangement continued. By noon of the second day Yuki could read me like a book, which is impressive, seeing as my own parents can't read my mood swings. She had the good sense not to ask "What are you drawing?" If you ask just about anybody that, the most common response is "You'll see," my response is nothing. I don't say anything. "Who is that?" Yuki asked about the drawing I was working on. "Er...it's...me, or, the way I wish I was," "He doesn't look like he has the same personality," Yuki frowned. "What?" I was confused "I don't like the sly look on his face," "You're kidding me. That's your hang up?" "Yes," Yuki is decisive. Sometimes stubborn. I flipped the page and began drawing something else. Yuki leaned over and watched. The form of a female body began to take shape. I wasn't sure what I was drawing. I was just...drawing. The girl on my page was reaching out to something. Frozen in one position. She waited to be free, so she could catch whatever she was reaching for. I was thirty minutes in when I realized I was drawing Yuki. I finished and closed the sketch book. "I um..." I don't like awkward situations. Even if I create them. I pulled out my Mp3 player and put on my headphones. "You like drum step music?" Yuki yet again started a conversation. "Uh...yeah," "What's your favorite song?"

"Euphoria,"

"Who's it by?"

"Geoxor,"

"Cool."

"What's yours?" I asked my first question. Yuki smiled a bit.

"Nandayo,"

"Who's it by?" I found myself looking for it. "Geoxor," Yuki laughed a bit. I slipped my headphones over her head. I'm not entirely sure how to put the sound she made into words. It was kind of like a startled "Oh!" I hit play. I spent the rest of the ride exchanging Geoxor songs with Yuki, and probably stayed up a little too late talking.

We finally made it to Yosemite. Three days of travel. We got our stuff off the bus. The chaperones didn't leave the bus though, which was … odd. I was about to turn my music back on when: "Listen up brats!" the bus driver could get peoples attention easily. I took my headphones off and looked up. "There won't be a ride home." The small crowd of students froze. "H-he's joking right?" Yuki looked a little shaken. I put my head back down. "I don't think so." "I hope you know how to set up camp on your own." the driver smirked. "The water is clean enough to drink assuming you boil it, and you might want to find flint and steel. The matches you have won't last long." "Oh, and kids?" I looked up again. "Good luck with the bears." He got back into the bus and drove away. The chaperones still sitting in the bus. Proving that he wasn't joking.
