Chapter 1

He felt the rage coursing through his body, fizzing through his blood, as his heart pounded in his chest. He was almost afraid that they would hear the sound.

He’d always suspected, but now he knew for certain. Standing at the window of his own damn home, he saw them. His wife, the woman he adored and shared two beautiful children with, with another man. To add insult to injury, he recognised the younger man she was fucking – Jack, her assistant. It would be such a cliché if it wasn’t so terrible.

His feet were rooted to the spot, unable to look away, unmoving in the darkness. He hated himself for his weakness. But he hated them more. He stood, watching but not really seeing, and wondered how long the affair had been going on. Had it started when they’d first went away on business? Before then? He would probably never know. As he accepted that simple truth, numbness began to overtake his pain, and he felt the rage subside. He welcomed the relief.

He moved from the window and walked to the backdoor of their home, his feet not making a sound on the pavement. He faced the back door, staring at it. What was he going to do, he wondered. He’d never planned what he would do if actually caught them, in truth, he didn’t really want to catch them, didn’t want it to be true. The numbness has spread throughout his whole body, adding to the sense of unreality that had overtaken him when he first peered through the window. As though in a dream, he saw his hand reach for the door handle, turning it.

He heard the soft murmur of voices and laughter in the living room. His living room. His wife. His mouth twisted in disgust as he walked towards the door.

The peaceful quiet in the neighbourhood was ruptured by the sound of two gunshots.
