Chapter 1

Nil, nil is egress, nil is life. The void is the truth, demonized it has become as man fears the cold dark hand of the truth, yet it is there, beyond heaven’s light and hell’s fire exits something more raw, between them there is something too dark to see, tenebris.

Man believes what it is told, a man who lived his life under the control of a despot will believe in the power and god-given glory of his dictator and the divine morality of his nation, this would not be a logical observation made by an outsider yet he will believe it as long as his nation is a cage.

Tenebris, tenebris they cry as they look into the night sky. Tenebris, the backstage, the land off the map, the void you are damned to wander after the final boss in slain. The monster in the shadows is cloaked by darkness, the darkness shields it from you makes it so it shall never be able to strike fear into your heart. I am the paladin, I am your perignon, your samurai, your knight, I am here to slay the tenebris to bring the light to the beasts the hide in the shadows, for while tenebris may shield you from fear it allows the demons and rouges to remain unseen before they may jump out and take your life. With tenebris you may never be forced to confront yourself, this is why I am here, to fight the darkness that shields one from himself.

When John awoke he was tired, this happens sometimes but from what he knew about biology it has no evolutionary benefit, there was a reason though which was that he had not gotten enough sleep. It was a nice summer day that day, August fourth of the year…

It was then he realized, he didn’t know what year it was. He looked around his room for a calendar, there was one but it had any reference to a year removed. He left his apartment to see if anyone knew what year it was, but nobody did.

Before he could waste his life pondering when he was wasting it he heard someone say something strange.

“You done setting up the computer?”

After hearing that Noah thought to himself “What’s a computer?”

Another voice replied “Yep, let’s get this over with. Soon we’ll be connected up with the real world for once.”

John went to the apartment he had heard the voices from, but the door was locked so he decided to go to work. He noticed that some people were watching him on the streets, nothing about him was of note that day, but for some reason there were people watching him. Not most people, but there was always exactly one person following him. Until one of them spoke into a device and walked away, then everything was normal again.

Once he was at work he talked to his coworker Dan about what had happened. Dan tried to explain some of what he had heard.

“From what I know a computer is some sort of job, usually for a women. Don’t know what that thing is about people following you, but I have thought about the year, I’m pretty sure it ends in a five and starts with a nineteen, don’t know the tens place though. Pretty sure all this years shit is just because nobody cares about what year it is anymore in the age of the newspaper, now that we aren’t going anywhere because everything has been invented. Those sci fi novels you’ll read about space ships, atom bombs, or trips to the moon, all just fantasy, the technology is the same as when we were kids, nothing more is ever going to be invented. We live in the great state of Jefferson, once just an island off east coast of the U.S., we are not one of America’s most populous state with Jefferson city being one of the biggest cities on the eastern seaboard, bet if we were allowed to go from state to state without government permission then everyone would move here… In this world of automobiles and newspaper, who is going to give a damn the exact year.”

When John got back to his apartment there was some sort of skirmish in the hallway, two young men had had their door busted down revealing strange machinery on the walls and the corpses of two young men. Standing over them was a figure half obscured by shadows.

Noticing John, the figure spoke to him in a strange whispery voice “So it seems you have gotten a glimpse tenebris, it’s ok, about ten percent of you have had an experience like this, beyond the sons of man that guard you sky, beyond the glimpses of dragons in your oceans, beyond the strings the sun and moon hang from, there are thing people like you would rather not see. A lot of people who have this type of experience have to be killed by us, don’t worry we’ve done research and we know you’re safe, just don’t talk about this to anyone, but a lot of people who completely forsake tenebris and up killing themselves or in a mad house, good thing you poor bastards don’t have internet. Appreciate the tenebris, for it protects you from life’s hell. Appreciate the knights in unseen lavender robes. Just don’t think about this. Ok?”

John replied “Ok? Also I don’t understand most of what you said.”

“You aren’t meant to.”

The shadowy figure pressed a button and disappeared as the smell of paint replaced his presence.
