A New Beginning

”Come on, come on... yes! Finally! I told you I could do it!” I smirk at Taven.

”Okay, I admit, you are getting pretty good at this. But, you froze the remote again.” He points at the frozen controller on the floor that looks like it was just shipped here from Antarctica.

“I will go get the hairdryer,” he says, walking out the door. Since he is gone, I might as well take this opportunity to introduce myself. I’m Calvin Smith, the greatest elemental of all time. Well, not yet technically, but someday I will be. If you thought for a second that this is a story about video games, then you’re completely wrong. I’m only playing the games because Taven was bragging that he was so good at them. But that’s not important. I bet you’re sitting there wondering how the controller is frozen. One second, Taven just walked back in.

“Got it, but since you got to use your powers I get to use mine.” He sets the hairdryer on the ground. Then he closes his eyes to concentrate. The hairdryer slowly lifts off of the ground and clicks on.

“Don’t drop it, last time that happened we had a frozen controller and half meletdtoothbrush! Those things are highly flammable.” He laughs as the remote is finally thawed and he puts down the hairdryer.

“You don’t have to remind me of the great hairdryer fire of 2021,” he says still smiling.

“Taven, your mom is here,” my mom yells up the stairs.

“Bye,” he says running down the stairs. Alrighty then, now back to the story from before. So, it all started back in first grade when my cup of water froze at lunch. Ever since then my life has changed. In third grade when Taven and I became friends I thought he was just a normal kid, but in fifth grade, he proved me wrong and lifted the teacher’s desk with his mind. Purple particles were all around the desk. It was pretty cool. There are only a few unlucky kids who don’t get their powers, but most do. Each year, eight special children are born. These are the elementals. The eight types are fire, water, ice, psychic, life, electricity, air, and earth. All Taven and I know is that I am the ice elemental and he is the psychic elemental. Next week we finally start high school where we get to meet the other elementals for the first time. For some reason there are always four boys and four girls, it’s just how it works. That’s enough explaining, for now, let’s get back to the main story. After a week of going to Supermart and buying supplies for school, I’m finally prepared for high school. I pack my suitcase full of clothes and school supplies and get ready for the bus to come. I had to pack clothes because we stay at school all year. I met Taven on the bus, and we started talking.

“I can’t wait to meet the other elementals,” he says.

“I was just thinking that myself.” When the bus finally pulled us up to the school, we immediately saw quite a few tables set up at the entrance. Taven and I walked over to the table marked ’ELEMENTALS’. We saw two girls standing next to the table. One had red hair and the other had long brown hair. It reminded me of Taven’s short bright red hair. Before we could even introduce ourselves a man appeared behind the table.

“Hello there, welcome to Johnson’s School of Superpowers. Here are your schedules. You guys are right next to each other so you can find your way together. Nice meeting you Rose and Kaylee.” We start talking as we head to our rooms.

“I’m super excited to meet more elementals!” Rose says happily.

“Me too!” I respond. There’s something different about Rose. I think we’re going to be great friends. When we get to our rooms and finish unpacking, we hear the intercom.

“All students may now freely roam the school until the weapons ceremony.” Oh man, I completely forgot, the weapons ceremony! During the weapons ceremony, eight different weapons are lined up on a table. The elementals for the year each take turns trying to use one of the weapons. Once one of the weapons glows your color, then it will start bonding with you. To fully bond with it you must hit a target with your weapon. Then once it is bonded, it disappears for you to summon it at will. During elemental class, they will teach us how to summon it. Taven and I start to head out the door when we hear a man yelling.

“Come down from there. No using your powers outside the training field!” We see a kid flying around on the ceiling. Taven and I look at each other and race outside. When we get outside, we immediately start looking for other elementals. A bolt of lightning falls from the sky.
