Chapter 1

RIVER

Only love can hurt like this.

FLASHBACK*

"I'm gonna marry you someday and we're gonna start a family River" "yea the distance will be so worth it in the end. Right?"

END*

"River hun are you awake you have a flight to catch remember." I groan as I roll onto my back every teenager's dream of waking up at 6 am to catch a flight for university. Well, this is my dream after all I've always wanted to go to university.

"Yea mum I'm up." "Hun" she entered my room looking at me like I'm making a big mistake I'm going to university how is that a mistake again.

"Are you sure you want to go to Columbia University you know we can wait a year and send you to a different university?"

As much as I love this woman she sometimes is too what's the word concerned? Softly groaning I answer her. "Yes, mum I'll be fine." "Are you sure? You're finally getting over Heaven what if you see her there?"

"Mum that girl has never had any interest in going to university and it's a big city ill be fine." Well, I hope so. She exited my room without saying anything else.

I took a quick shower. This is supposed to be a new beginning. Why does it feel like I'm only going back into the past. Maybe it's deja vu always finding a way to go see Heaven in New York. Now I'm gonna live there.

I'd admit it I'm still not over her. I never will be but I need to get over it, It's been two years. I felt warmth on my cheeks realizing I was crying. I wiped away the few tears. Bringing my hair up into a messy ponytail realizing that I need to get some hair dye again or maybe I should just leave it to let it grow out.

One last look at my room the room I won't see in a long time. I should probably be relieved that I'm moving out. No more parents, no more curfew, no more needing to ask to do this or that but I wasn't I'll miss mum and her constant worrying and nagging.

I'll miss Dad too even though he's a drunk and we have never gotten along even though I'm the youngest I've never really gotten special treatment or however they say us youngest get treated.

"I'll miss this home,"

I say out loud as I grab my bags and walk out of the room closing the door.

As soon as I walk into the kitchen mum's arms wrap around me crying onto my shoulder whispering she'll miss me over and over again. I wrap my arms around her too and say.

"I'm gonna miss you too mum." She pulls away and kisses me on the cheek. "My baby is all grown up" a small laugh left my lips. "I love you my child and remember I'm always looking out for you"

"I love you too mum." We heard the taxi driver outside and she encircled me in her arms again.

"I wish I could go with you to the airport but I really need to get to that appointment" "I know you do mum"

Her eyes glowed as she looked at me full of proud. She squeezed me tightly and kissed me on the cheek again. Her hugs are the best to me. "Goodbye sweetie, I love you." I smiled at her and said, "I love you too mum" again I wonder how many times she's said to me she loves me in the past few days.

She let me go I wished I could stay a little longer to have her arms around me to have my mum for just a few more minutes but I picked up my bags heading for the front door. I walked towards the taxi thinking about the things and possibilities that could happen.

Who would have known I would regret getting into the taxi.

When I came back from deep inside my mind I was at the airport it hit me I needed to hurry up or I'll probably be late. I quickly paid the driver and rushed in. I was luckily just on time but everything in me screamed to turn back around and go home and of course I didn't listen.

Sighing softly as I sit down in my seat on the plane, I close my eyes and let myself drift off for the flight to New York.

Once I woke up I was surprised we haven't landed yet, I hate flying it scares me knowing we could go down at any second.

I've read up on so many plane crashes. The number of people who are bruised for the rest of there life's and killed in them I hate it. A flight attendant came around and asked if I wanted anything I politely declined.

Food on planes is disgusting I'd rather wait till I get off to eat even if it is a 42-hour flight. I ate on a plane once and I decided from there on out never again. I looked up and then the air hostess spoke up.

"Ladies and gentlemen, welcome to New York Stewart International Airport SWF.

Local time is 1:45 am and the temperature is two degrees.

For your safety and comfort, please remain seated with your seat belt fastened until the Captain turns off the Fasten Seat Belt sign. This will indicate that we have parked at the gate and that it is safe for you to move about.

Please check around your seat for any personal belongings you may have brought on board with you and please use caution when opening the overhead bins, as heavy articles may have shifted around during the flight.

If you require deplaning assistance, please remain in your seat until all other passengers have deplaned. One of our crew members will then be pleased to assist you.

On behalf of New York Stewart International Airlines and the entire crew, I'd like to thank you for joining us on this trip We're looking forward to seeing you onboard again shortly. Have a nice evening!"

As soon as the fastened seat belt sign went off I quickly move to get all my things and get off the plane before I get sick.

I walk calmly throughout the airport before I call an Uber to pick me up as I walk outside I look up towards the stares a soft smile crosses my face as I remember our first date well in real-life date.

Remembering how we laid on her car bonnet eating pizza listening to music talking as we looked at the lights. The way her lips felt on mine as she kissed me for the first time. Promising forever well it's not forever anymore I guess.

I get in the Uber and tell him where to drop me off. I was excited and nervous about the university and I don't know if it was truly what I still wanted. I mean I always wanted to live here but as of right now at this moment I just never thought it would actually happen.

I lay my head on the car window and stare at the passing lights it was beautiful and everything the little girl in me wanted and still wants. I'll always want this the busy city, all the people, the sound of cars and the lights specially the lights. The car comes to a stop and I thank the driver heading into the hotel for the night.

The alarm goes off at seven turning around and snoozing it thinking I'll just sleep five more minutes but then I'll be lazy for the rest of the day.

Deciding on going for a shower stripping myself on the way to the bathroom.

I let the warm water fall over my body a soft sigh leaving my lips just standing there for a few minutes before I start washing myself.

Once I got out of the shower I decided on wearing some black ripped jeans with a jacket not even bothering to put on a shirt under it.

If I focus hard enough I can still imagine the smell of Heaven on it. That night it was the second time I was here in New York. It had started raining and she gave me her jacket I kept it it's the only piece of clothing I have of her. I miss her. I shake that thought away. No I can't I can't think of her right now.

I walk out of the room locking it up and giving the keys to the hotel front desk before I start heading to a nearby cafe getting myself coffee and a muffin before I pass out of hunger.

I stand in Mr. Reed's office as he gives me a map and the key to my dorm wishing me well with my next few years of University.

"If you need anything, Mrs. King let me know okay"

"of course Mr. Reed"

I walk through the halls towards my dorm wondering what my roommate might be like.

A few people I pass wave at me but it looks like most people keep to their own, groups. Which isn't that odd it was the same in high school well for me small town schools and cities aren't the same.

I arrive at my dorm putting in the key the lock finding out its already open walking in looking around before I head to my room. I settle in getting comfortable walking out of my room closing the door.

I turn around meeting my eyes with a green eyed blonde girl she's beautiful she smiles at me she has dimples and freckles all over her face and then she speaks.

"hey you must be new right I'm Emily and your roomie is in the kitchen."

Her voice was angelic sounded so innocent like nothing in the world would dare to harm her actually I bet she could be a singer if she wanted.

I smile she seems nice just as I'm about to speak up someone else speaks in a very familiar voice.

"hey so I've ran out of wine for you so I hope a beer is fine id say I'm sorry but I'm not" the girl walked out of the kitchen

"ugh you never have wine for me"

she mumbles and her voice becomes loud as she says

"your literally an asshole have I fucking told ya that"

I look towards the girl who stepped out of the kitchen and my eyes want to water immediately as I see Heaven.

She's as beautiful as I remember her. Black hair falling just above her shoulders and her ice blue eyes they looked emotionless now.

Her body language screamed power everything about her. She definitely wasn't that shy girl anymore.

"No" I thought. We look at each other not saying a thing.

Everything was spinning my mum was right I shouldn't have came here. My thoughts the gut feeling I should of listened and now it's to late.

I take a step back feeling like my whole world just came crashing down again.

I felt like passing out and everything just disappeared for a second it was just me and her.

All the pain came back it felt like she just broke up with me all over again.

I shake my head slightly quickly moving into my room again slamming the door I fall to the floor as I listen to her yell my name.

"River open up let's talk please"

I didn't respond I just locked the door and I heard her sigh.

"You can't stay in there forever we're gonna have to talk sooner or later"

I gulped closing my eyes as I let the tears stream down my face. I hate that she was right. I can't hide away forever.

I took a deep breath and I saw it all over again her walking out of the kitchen. She dominated the room as soon as she walked into it.

The way it felt to have her blue eyes on me again a part of me just wanted to jump her to kiss her to have my hands memorize her body again.

The other part wanted to scream at her to tell her I hate her for how she hurt me. How she's still hurting me.

I heard Emily speak.

"You two know each other?"

"yea we do or well we did it's a long story" Heaven sighed again and then she walked away from the door
