Chapter 1 - Wolf me

“No! Stay back!” I shrieked, my voice trembling. “See this piece of wood? You won’t like what happens if it connects with your head, you wretched wolf!” I hissed, mustering the most menacing tone I could, brandishing the piece of wood at the massive wolf before me. But it responded with only a dismissive snort, unimpressed by my attempts at intimidation.

The beast continued to advance, one slow step after another, forcing me to retreat in tandem. Panic set in as I realized I was backed into a corner, a massive tree trunk blocking my escape route.

This secluded district had been a tranquil haven for everyone, a dreamlike escape. The beauty of Farraey Los Bana was beyond my wildest expectations. A small island far from the chaos of Houston, it boasted pristine beaches, crystalline waters, and lush forests. I had come here for a well-deserved break at the urging of my best friend Ciara, who insisted it was the perfect getaway from my relentless work schedule.

As I arrived on the island a mere three days ago, I was greeted by its natural beauty and the warm smiles of the locals. They even greeted me with a slight bow, a gesture I initially found a bit excessive. When I tried to reciprocate, they seemed surprised and discouraged me from doing so. I had chalked it up to their customs.

But now, as I faced this menacing wolf, my serene escape had taken a dark turn. I had been enjoying an evening walk, captivated by the scenic trails leading to a breathtaking view of the ocean. Time slipped away, and the fading light caught me off guard. In my haste to fend off the threatening creature with glowing, fiery red eyes and a menacing growl, I fumbled with my portable light, throwing it at the wolf’s face before making a frantic escape, screaming in terror.

My lungs burned from the exertion, and my voice was lost in my panic. I had never been prepared for such a situation on this supposedly safe island. Regret coursed through me; I should have stayed in the comfort of my cottage.

The wolf growled, its snout inches from my face, snapping me back to reality. Tears welled up in my eyes, and I was on the verge of crying. I wanted to blame Ciara for this, but how could I when tonight might be my last night on this earth?

“Do you want to die? Do you think you can scare me? I’m not afraid! I’m a human, and I’m smarter than you, you animal!” I yelled as I swung the stick at the wolf. It remained undeterred.

My knees trembled, and cold sweat covered me. When had it become so dark? I desperately scanned my surroundings, but all I could see was an abyss of darkness. “Lord, please save me!” I whimpered in fear as the wolf sniffed at my chest and down my abdomen. Was it deciding where to bite first? This wolf could be rabid; I might die of rabies before becoming its meal. “God, help me!”

My heart raced, and my breath came in ragged gasps as the wolf nosed at my lower region and made an unsettling, purring sound. I felt light-headed, nearly fainting. Could it be that this wolf was a pervert, or did it simply want to tear me apart right then and there for an easy meal? No!

“Stay the hell away from me!” My screams turned into a long, piercing shriek as the wolf’s head moved, revealing its bared incisors with a snarl. My whole body shook, and I gasped for air, feeling my consciousness slipping away.

I’m going to die.
