Chapter 1

As the sun goes down I got worried. I hadn’t heard from my husband, Charlie in a while and I’m getting worried. He called me just before they left and they should have been back by now so I was right to be concerned. Howe ever there could have been traffic so I was willing to wait another half hour before I start phoning him and the police.Him and Lola went on a day trip to a national park and said they’d be back by dinner. Lola had been begging us to go to the national park for ages yet we never go round to it. As a 7 year old, she really wanted to go as there was a theme park she had begged us to go but as I had marking to complete I was unable to go.I am a teacher at a secondary school so marking and planning is really important.

15 minutes later, I got a phone call, a call that I never wanted to happen in my worst nightmares. It was a call from the police station. With the most heartbreaking news I had ever expected. My husband had died and my daughter was on life support. They were involved in a drunk driving accident. I froze. How could have this ever happened. I lost the one I loved most. I then quickly ran to the door and put my shoes on and got my car key’s.

Tears coming down my face, I ran to the car. The memories were all flashing before my eyes. From the day we met, thinking about the day he asked me out, proposed to me, getting married and being a parent for the first time. All of that has now gone thanks to a selfish person who decided to drink and take a life as a result of that.

I parked up as quick as I could and rushed in quickly. A nurse led me to her and told me she was struggling to breathe. This sentence broke me as I then followed the nurse into the room. I saw her and I was breathless. Her small body was covered in bruises and scratches. Her blonde shiny hair was the only thing that wasn’t damaged as it glowed. She got it from Charlie and now I now he’s gone I broke down in even more tears than before. I hugged her tightly as cried. I saw her open her eyes all of a sudden. She new who I was she said mummy in a whisper and then closed her eyes again.

I stayed with her overnight and called out of work. In the middle of the night Lola began to struggle to breathe even more than before and then the worst happened. She stopped breathing. As much as the nurses helped there was no hope for her and she died. I was now all alone. Alone and scared.
