Chapter 1

Loud music blared through the speakers. The drinks flowed across the tables just as fast as the bartenders could make them. The conversations were loud. The party patriots struggled to hear each other over the thumping music, and the dance floor filled with swaying bodies were dancing to the beat. The party vibes were not going to die down among these people anytime soon, that was for sure.

But I focus on nothing except the girl sitting on the barstool, a few steps away, smoking a cigarette. Dressed in black from head to toe, her stance was loud and clear, that she never gives a damn about anyone in this world.

“Are you sure you want me to talk to that girl of all the people present in this club, uncle?” I asked him. Trying my best to hide the vagueness in my tone, but by seeing his amused face, I knew it didn’t work.

He stared at me for some seconds, which turned into minutes, and he finally spoke, “I thought you had a way with girls-″ Oh, man! I face-palmed, knowing well where he was going. “-that’s what you told me some time ago. Right? Something about being the popular one and bullshit of the world. She is also a girl. Probably your age, and here you are, shivering to even make small talk with her. What a shame.” He mused, shaking his head.

At moments like this, I deeply regret those words I told him the other day when he wanted me to narrate ‘how my high school life was’.

I know very well what he was up to, hurting my ego, so he can get his work done, and definitely, it was working, but today I knew better than that. “Well! I have a way with those whose aura does not scream, ‘Danger! Danger! Do not come near me unless you want yourself to end up dead!’”

Now, I am neither a freaking introvert nor a coward. I never shy away from making small talks or even fully-fledged conversations with strangers. Yet, I don’t know why. The idea of speaking to that particular girl made my insides churn with a feeling of nervousness.

Furthermore, to my surprise! My uncle - the sole reason as to why I sneak into my home like a thief after partying with friends and the one who hates seeing me flirt with girls, not only asked me to accompany him to a club. But even wants me to talk with a girl- and this was his dare. And not just any girl, but this particular girl dressed up in full black. All this was making me suspicious about his current mental health.

Once again, he stared at me for a few seconds, which turned into minutes! Something about him staring at me today didn’t seem right. His face had mixed expressions of amusement and maybe hesitation? I clearly remember the last time he was hesitant while speaking to me. It was ages ago when he broke my mom’s favourite ancient Greek vase while playing soccer at home and then wanted me to save him from the wrath of his dearest sister-in-law. So guess, this is gonna end up bad.

“I should have known.” He suddenly spoke, bringing me back into the present. “I should have known beforehand that you would be such a... um, what they say? Uh yeah- a pushover!”

He uttered those words so casually that even I could have believed it despite knowing that was no truth. And this did the trick!

He again managed to hurt my ego, as always, and I- Jayson Williams being the egoistic maniac I am, did not waste a moment for further hesitation and turned around violently to storm off to the counter.

I guess I heard him chuckle but didn’t bother to acknowledge it because we both knew what that chuckle meant. We knew that any way around, tonight he was the sole winner!

“Don’t reveal too much about yourself.” His words suddenly stopped me in my tracks and made me face him again. I was about to ask him what he meant by that. But as if he read my mind, he waved his hand dismissively and repeated. “Don’t reveal too much about yourself. Okay?” He paused and continued, “I’ll be on the other side of the club, probably on the dance floor. Meet me there once you get it over with.”

Get it over, with? What was I going to do, my school homework? Because talking to a girl doesn’t sound like that. But before I could say anything, he simply left for the dance floor. ‘Okay!’ I took a deep breath. ′Nothing about him or his mental health is suspicious tonight!′

I watched him as he disappeared into a sea of strangers. Even if I can’t see him from here, I’m sure he must be spying on me from wherever he currently is. And thus, I headed towards the bar counter. But the mixed feelings of nervousness, excitement and suspicion didn’t leave me.

There is definitely something more about tonight!
