Chapter 0 - This World’s Unfair Rules
I want to go home.
The cold air stung against her pale skin, goosebumps rising along her arms as she ran. No matter how much she ran, how much she moved, the cold clung to her incessantly, biting at her like a pack of rabid dogs, nipping at her bare feet with no mercy.
Her numb fingers were only barely aware of the thing she gripped to like a lifeline, the object almost feeling scalding in comparison to the world around her, both a source of determination, as well as despair. Tears did not come, as she had none left to shed, but her coal gray eyes held a horror strickeness in their dull sheen.
I want to be free.
She let out a breath, white and foggy in the dark cold night, rising up as if abandoning her and her hopeless situation to watch from the heavens. She slowed, feeling that her energy was ebbing away, as she approached a bridge. She needed to catch her breath, and she leaned against one side, trying to gasp the oxygen in, hoping that even in this state she could muster enough rigor to finish what she started.
The other side is so close..
Her legs wobbled a little as she walked, so she opted to use a free hand to support herself with the railing, ignoring the way the railings freezing metal bit into her hand, sure to leave damage. She didn’t care. That damage was nothing compared to what awaited her if she didn’t manage to get away. She had to get away.
I’m going to be free.
Exactly halfway across the bridge, she froze, hearing footsteps behind her, slow and confident. Completely unbothered with her disheveled appearance. Along with those footsteps, came the clear jingle of keys, and her blood soon ran just as cold as the world around her. The person was speaking to her, but she heard nothing. She saw nothing.
Nothing but the jingling of keys registered in her mind, and she tried to back away, but she was stopped by the railing behind her. Her breathing was ragged, uneven, panicked.
No no no no no no nonononono
She screamed. She screamed loud, until her voice became hoarse. She screamed until her throat threatened to bleed if she screamed anymore, and then she screamed more.
She gripped the item in her hand tighter, feeling a desperate fury come over her, and she charged at the person, still screaming, as she felt the blade pierce into the person’s shoulder.
She let the knife go, backing away as she felt blood seeping from the person’s wound, a warm liquid pooling up in the fabric, satisfaction and victory starting to overcome her, but as she opened her mouth to voice it, she caught nothing but the metallic taste of blood in her own mouth. She tried to swallow down the blood, hold it down, but more came up, pooling in her mouth and trickling out whether she wanted it to or not.
It was too much.
It was too much.
She was drowning again.
She was drowning. She was dying.
She backed away again, feeling the railing, and kept backing away, until she felt nothing behind her. Nothing under her. Nothing for a moment, before suddenly there was a rush of cold enveloping her, and she was surrounded by frigid water. She was aware that she was sinking, because the lights from atop the bridge were slowly shrinking. She sunk further and further down, feeling cold seep deep into her bones, freezing every fragile part of her.
And then, from those cold bones, came a new warmth. She would have been surprised, if she wasn’t drifting away. How could she go like this?
She was meant to do great things, she was going to do so much in the world. If it weren’t for… She didn’t deserve to die! She didn’t have the time, she wanted the time, she needed the time, she-
You don’t deserve to die like this.
