WHEN I was a young girl, my father used to tell me a story about a Devil of Joy. He told me that long ago, in the times of Ancient Magicks of which most spells are either forbidden or forgotten, the land of Or'du was ruled by Gaia. As the population grew Gaia took a protégé to help maintain peace and serenity amongst all creatures.
The Devil of Joy is actually a spell itself, at its core. Or rather, a curse. Derived from N'tar trees is a substance of purely cursed magic. The legend goes that Ulla, the first servant of Gaia, became angry when Gaia insisted she need not take a male companion. Ulla cursed the N'tar trees which have now dwindled go the brink of extinction but at the time were rampant. Her curse poisoned the land and descendants of Gaia, causing them to no longer be able to bear female children.
Ulla lived on to have children that lived on to hate her, and thus the descendants of Ulla don't hold Ulla as a prophet or idol of any kind, but we give praise and raise temples to Gaia for we believe it is her blessing on the Earth that allowed Ulla to be all but erased from history.
Although they are scarce, N'tar trees still grow. In hidden corners of deep forests there are even small, secretly kept farms of them. Over time, the substance in the N'tar trees has been manipulated with dark magic until it was diluted into a consumable... Medicine.
They call this medicine Ulla, The Devil of Joy.
