Chapter 1
BLINDMAN
BY Alexander Plonsky
Chapter: 1
So apparently David is going to camp, he was just eating his breakfast and next thing he knew he was in the car faster than he could say video games.
“I’ve been telling you for 6 months,” his mom claimed in her defense. David guessed he should listen more often at the dinner table… or at all for that matter.
“But mom, kids are evil. Rotten to the bone,” David said. He was homeschooled, so he didn’t know a whole lot about kids but he watched enough sitcoms about high school to know what the real world is like.
“You know what I told myself when I had to deal with bullies? I told myself they will be in a dumpster and I will be rich beyond my wildest dreams,” his mom said.
“But you didn’t turn out to be rich beyond your wildest dreams did you?” David said, rolling his eyes.
“Uh… ooh! Look at all those nice trees. Wow, they are really green.”
When they arrived at a sign that said CAMP, his mom dropped him off and drove off at about 150 miles per hour. David waved, then he turned around and saw some kids sucking up to adults, others giving wimps wedgies.
“Huh boy,” David muttered, “this is going to be hard.” When he turned around he saw the stomach of a 6 foot 4 guy with a tan. Bully...or Dwayne Johnson.
“Well, well, well. If it isn’t the camp loser. My name is John. I’m your camp counselor and your worst nightmare.”
“So you’re the clown from pennywise? That’s messed up.”
“Gentlemen!” he called, sneering. That’s when several guys came out of the bushes and behind trees.
“Do you have those goons on call?” David asked.
“Well, he has our phone number, but he never-” one of the guys said, scratching their head.
“Bunk!” John said, “why are you telling him this? Gentlemen, this boy needs a lesson in camp spirit…” he had an evil flare in his eye, “...and we’re going to give him ‘special treatment.’” They all laughed.
The next month was brutal. They cracked jokes at him, gave him wedgies, nuggies. May not seem like much but it was a lot to David.
One day, they were pushing him around by a disgusting river that’s practically acid, because it's near a nuclear power plant.
"Careful guys," David said.
'Afraid?" one said.
"Afraid of acid and nuclear power, yes. Of you, no."
Finally, David got pushed into the river.
The camp had always exaggerated that the river was full of acid. Never did David think it was going to b
David couldn’t swim. It was three hours until David’s body was washed ashore. Of course, he wasn’t dead. He may not have swam but he was so light, he floated. Floated to the beach.
But that wasn’t it. David was blind and no one ever knew how or why.
