“Stop, please stop!”
She screamed at top of her lungs as she ran towards the two ferocious wolves who craved nothing but each other’s death.
They both growled in anger as they calculate every move on who would get to rip out a throat first. The woman tried in haste to get there on time but her legs could only do so much against the harshness of the forest ground.
Even from afar, she could see the silhouette of the large wolf, whose fur is intimidatingly dark against the green foliage of the forest. On the opposite end, the grey wolf looked as menacing despite its slightly smaller stature, but she knew for a certain that size is not to be underestimated since they are cunningly quick and be as deadly.
She tried to speed up as they started circling each other, her lungs hurting as it she tried to catch some much-needed air. The branches along the way grazed her skin and face, as beads of sweat trickled down to the cuts, making her wince from the stinging.
“Stop this now!” She shrieked louder when she saw the murderous glint from the black wolf.
He stepped forward and growled louder, challenging his opponent to attack. The loudness of his growl was deafening, and she felt nothing but pure fear from it. The grey wolf also stepped forward and roared back, but his face quickly darted towards the woman as he noticed her incoming presence. The grey wolf’s eyes pleaded for her to not come any closer to the danger but she carried on as she knew that there could only be one outcome in all of this - death.
An opponent should never turn their eyes away from their enemy and that slight distraction was exactly what the black wolf was waiting for. Her eyes widened in terror as soon as she saw his lethal glare, and she felt the dread in her bones.
She ran faster as soon as the black wolf bolted forward to the grey wolf who just noticed the impending danger coming towards him. With a carnal growl, the black wolf jumped forward with its mouth agape, eyes fixed on its opponent’s throat. But with just mere seconds she sprinted forward in front of the grey wolf, shielding him with her body as the black wolf charged before barrelling straight towards her.
The impact was swift and she feel her body slam hard to the ground. Her chest started to hurt and her vision became hazy, as she struggled to catch her breath which became ragged. She felt a bit of wetness starting to pool on her head as the smell of blood became more prominent under their noses.
She tried to move but she felt paralysed on the ground, not even her voice could utter words, just groans of pain as she fought to stay conscious. Laying on the cold ground, she heard the shifting of bones and a loud piercing scream from the grey wolf as he gently held her hand.
“Natalie darling, stay with me please.” He pleaded but she could only blink back, as the tears fell from her eyes. She could feel both the fondness and the fear in his words.
A sorrowful howl from the black wolf echoed through the forest as she heard him shift before shuffling forward to get closer. His loud sobs pained her heart as his hand slowly caressed her face to comfort her, the guilt of hurting her clear in his voice.
“I’m so sorry Amelia, I didn’t mean to hurt you! I’m so sorry my love.” He cried loudly, his body trembling with each sob.
Her chest started to ache from the immense guilt she felt, knowing that these two men were fighting to their deaths over her.
The black wolf fought to claim his past,
and the grey wolf fought back to claim his future.
The woman however felt grateful that she managed to stop them in time by putting herself in harm’s way even if the pain for her became more unbearable. Losing her own fight, she closed her eyes and accepted the darkness that was waiting to finally consume her.
