Chapter 1 - The Summer Job
My attention returned to my watch. My best friend didn’t show up until after 3 o’clock. Starbucks’ window provided a chilly and rainy view of the outside world. I kept an eye on the time as I waited for a friend to arrive at Starbucks. I was looking for a summer job while seated on the couch and using my smartphone to browse the internet.
The job advertisements revealed a wide range of positions in many professions. And 90% of the work was contracted. I sought a short-term job that paid in cash and lasted for a few months. I eventually found a product-selling advertisement after scrolling through the listings. Information about the job description or the goods sold was lacking.
The only requirements listed in the description were that I would be well-mannered and possess a valid driver’s licence. I might be able to get away with doing this, I thought to myself. I emailed the business to request additional details about the position. Instantaneously, I received a response and an invitation to an interview.
Due to the morning’s prolonged rain, my friend arrived at the coffee shop looking drenched. She joined me on the sofa after setting her coat and handbag on a wooden chair.
After giving me an inquisitive look, she asked me what I had been doing. She was informed of the position I had discovered online. You don’t understand what work is, she remarked, laughing out loud. Okay, I responded. You don’t need to make such a big deal of it. I called the waiter and ordered a black coffee with sugar. And we chatted about many things taking place on in our lives.
The coffee shop conversation lasted for several hours. I informed her that I was returning home and would speak with her soon.
At around 6.30 p.m., it was evening outside the coffee shop. I climbed into my car and headed home. I pulled into my driveway, parked the car, and got out.
Even though my home was modest, I felt comfortable living there. I was the only resident there. I entered the kitchen and started cooking dinner by turning on the microwave there.
