Chapter 1

A dark figure crept in the darkness. I was too busy listening to music to hear the crunch of gravel behind me. I was to distracted to notice that the birds were flying away from the direction. I suddenly felt hands grab me and dragged me into the shadows.

Earlier that month

I grabbed my pen and started sketching. It was the only thing that kept me occupied for long amounts of time. I was drawing my classroom. I made sure to include every little detail. From the amount of people there to the words on the board. Our teacher was just getting ready to start teaching. I yawned. This was our first class of the day and of course it had to be History. I had gotten to school an hour before it was supposed to start. I groggily rubbed my eyes and turned to the front of the room.

The class was about how the Civil war had occurred. We were in 8th grade and had been learning about this for a few years. My friend Lexi had been taking notes despite her knowing all of it. She had always made sure to take notes. She could get an easy A in every subject. She had light brown hair and had light tan skin. She was about 5′ 2" tall which was short compared to my height at 5′ 6". Our class went just as normal and boring before I had to go to the next class.

“Can I speak with you Mason?” our teacher asked.

I nodded and walked to the front of the room.

“You only have 5 days. That is all they can hold on for.” he said as he handed me a envelope.

“Wha?” I asked.

“No questions. Give this envelope to Lexi and this one to Cody,” He said with a stern look. I couldn’t do anything but nod.

I took the envelopes from his hand and the I went to my next class. I took my seat next to Lexi and behind Cody.

“Here,” I said giving her the envelope.

“What is it?” she asked.

“I don’t know but don’t open it now,” I said.

She slipped it away into her bag. Our teacher as normal was late. I didn’t mind though. Cody spun around in his seat to face us. I handed him the letter and told him to open it later. He put it in his bag and started talking about some of the most random things.

“I hope I am going to get onto the football team,” He said.

He wanted to be the quarterback but there were some other good quarterbacks. I played tennis and Lexi and Cody did too. The tennis tryouts were starting tomorrow. I was so nervous. I had been able to barely get a spot on the team the first time. I had ranked 11/12. Our math teacher cleared her throat.

We turned around and the class began. Our school was one of the most competitive academic and athletic schools. So inside the class we all sat down in chairs based on how well we did in classes. There was 26 students in a class. The smart kids sat closer to the back. We sat in rows so it was easy to tell who was the smart kids and who wasn’t. They payed more attention to the front of the room. I sat in the second to last row. The rows went 6,6,6,4,4.

Eventually the day went by and I was able to open up my letter.

The three of us stood in a triangle. We slowly started to open the letter. And what I saw was shocking and confusing.

Dear Mason,

You have been chosen as one of 6 individuals to restore order in this crime filled world. You are more special then you realize. Be careful with your powers. You have 5 days before they can find you.

-The Guardians of the Light

Lexi and Cody had the exact same letter.

“Who is they?” Lexi asked.

“It’s obviously bad guys” Cody said.

“Why would they choose us?” I asked.

“I don’t know but does it have to do with these powers?” Lexi said.

“Try searching the name up online.” Cody said.

When I searched the name up my phone crashed and I didn’t know what had happened.

“Okay so maybe not that,” I said.

We agreed that we can work on this later. I grabbed my bags and walked back home. I jumped down onto my couch and pulled my jacket over me. My mom was cooking a wonderful smelling meal. I went onto onto my phone and saw that the tennis coach had just emailed us.

Dear Potential tennis players,

Tomorrow we will begin tryouts. However we will run a mile first. In order to get a better placement you should run the mile in 9 minutes or less. A placement will decide who you play against. If you are able to get a good mile you will be able to play in a higher group. We will also take into account your past tennis record. I wish you the best of luck.

-Coach Derek

I was so nervous. I had been practice running a mile and had been getting 8 minutes. I didn’t want to ruin my chances before I even got on. I also had to deal with that mystery letter. Ugh why must it be so difficult.
