The Mentor

No matter how hard I try, I just can’t get spider webs to come out of my fingertips. You see, I’m Spiderman’s biggest, number one fan. I have all of his comic books and all of his figurines. I even have Spiderman pj’s. When my mom asked me what I wanted the theme to be for my 7th birthday party, of course I said Spiderman. One time, I saw a spider that was red, and I touched it, but it bit me, and I had to go to the hospital because it was poisonous. I wish Spiderman was home right now. We would defeat villains like Mrs. Krumb, my teacher, and tell her if she didn’t stop giving us homework, Lucky the Guinea pig would go missing. But even if that happened, Spiderman wouldn’t do that. He’s too nice. I always tell my mom that Spiderman is super cool and since he’s super cool, we should buy all of Spiderman’s action figures before they run out. My mom laughed and rolled her eyes. I don’t know why she does that, I’m being serious. But then Marcael from across the street said, “What’s Spiderman” and I said, “How do you not know what Spiderman is”.

He said he knows Polly Pockets and American Girl Dolls are. Marcael has a lot of sisters. This is crazy, he has to know Spiderman! So, I gave him some comics, figurines. I still liked them, but I can’t keep playing by myself, and I can’t keep playing pretend Spiderman with Marcael’s Barbies. There’s only so many red dresses I can use.

Then I got an idea. What if there are other people that don’t know what Spiderman is? I just can’t go on living like that. I saved up my money and went to garage sales. I was looking for Spiderman stuff, but this time it was different. These weren’t for me. When I told my mom about this, she said I had too much Spiderman things. I told her my plan. After we had two boxes filled up with Spiderman clothes, costumes, books and even blankets, I gave all of that away to Goodwill, after letting Marcael pick out the really cool stuff first, though.

After a week, I went back to Goodwill. Every single Spiderman themed object was sold. I smiled. A few months later, Mom, Marcael and I went down to the park. While mom was talking with Marcael’s mom, me and Marcael played with this new girl, Ciara.

“Do you like Spiderman?” she asked, the beads on her braids were all different shades of red.

“Yeah!” we both said, together.

She pulled out a Spiderman action figure. I looked at it and saw the spot where I accidentally put a banana sticker on him, with some of the sticker still on him.

I smiled and said, “I used to have something like that.”.
