Chapter 1

My small shoes made small tapping noises on the cold white floor. Old school music played on the speakers, people swarmed the shelves. Crowds of people with the expressions of someone stabbed in the side, lined the aisles, watching. Their eyes stung like poison, waiting for you to make a small mistake. I clutched her hand, as we continued walking as I bowed my head. The shelves seemed to tower to the sky. “I’m never making it out of here.” Avoiding stares we continued. After around 10 years, we were ready to leave. Sweating, I continued holding her hand. The exit was in sight, she was prepared to make the exchange. Sliding the items across the counter, her eyes slowly met the man's.

“Oh no! I seem to have forgotten something!” she shouted, letting go of my hand. “Wait here!” Her silhouette slowly disappeared from sight, leaving me alone. Alone.

"I'm never making it out of here." Looking down at me, the man scowled. He reached for the items. "No, no no, please don't," I couldn't help but plead in my head. But the Trader Joe's worker clearly couldn't hear, as he continued to scan the groceries. "Please come back mom..." I murmured.
