"The story starts out kind of dull, I was about to put it down after the first chapter. I would suggest giving more of a feel for the crew and perspective on life. The relationships between the members of the crew are somewhat lacking throughout the story, like you didn't have time to tell it before the action started happening and that also reflects further on in the story. Monty seems lackluster and underdevelopped, I only have a clear picture of how Blaine relates to his mom but not to everyone else, Theresa's character would be fuller if we knew more of how she became a captain or any other backstory that would enable the reader to connect her to a type. The idea behind the situation of the squid people is very neat and is the only reason I really felt excited for this book. Sometimes I find it hard to visualize the action (in contrast the fight with the surogate destroyer seemed very clearly depicted). The vaccine seemed all too easy and not very relevant...maybe you could do something with it. I'd recommend trying to rewrite bits from the first few chapters, maybe build more slowly to Amy's getting sucked through the portal, and some of the later bits to pace the action towards several spikes in thrill or a slow build-up, as you prefer it. Keep up the good work."
