Chapter 1
“Of course, we’ll get her right away.” A monotone voice called. Though, it sounded as though they were trying too hard to pretend to be happy. “Nora, this man wants to be your daddy,” The lady’s face was faded...How old am I? Five, I think. I nod, just excited that I was chosen, really going somewhere I could call home. The tall man wore a crisp, clean black suit. He even had a briefcase. I wonder if I’m going to a wealthy home. That’d be really cool! Everything here seemed really foggy around me. The man flashed me a forced happy smile. “Come on, sweetie. Pack your things,” He gleefully spoke to me. I could see the other kids behind the desk glare at me. “Well, you see sir- Oh! U-um D-dad, I don’t have anything to pack,” I don’t remember my parents. “ah, that’s alright! that’s the faster we can get you home! Thanks again!” The man, or my father waved everyone off, and out we went.
The car ride seemed to fly, and next thing I knew, I was naked and strapped down to a table. My back arched at how cold everything was. I could feel my eyelids being propped open. A bunch of people were gathered around me, watching, waiting. There were needles in my arms, straps across my thin arms, my chest, my slim belly, and my legs were tied down as well. All of this seemed like something out of a science movie. Tubes and wires were connected to my body, everything was white. “Alright you little shit, since your stupid body didn’t want to comply, we’ll have to prod at this eye,” A familiar man smirked. Although, they didn’t tie my mouth shut, and a bloody smirk was stretching onto my face.“Aren’t you stupid since you couldn’t make it work?” I asked with a hoarse voice. though I was weak, I could still talk, hardly though. The man smiled grimly as my screams pierced everyone’s ears. The tool was buried into my eyeball, digging and scrapping against everything, I could feel all of it. My voice ran hoarse as they kept cutting into my eye, taking things out, putting things in, pumping things into and out of my body. At least they had the decency to wrap my eye when they were finished.
I was forced into a straight jacket and a metal mask, tubes were put into my body, and I was locked away into a capsule. It felt like forever before they came to unwrap my bandaged eye. I could feel my body grow rather frail and brittle. Eventually though, men in white suits unlock my tiny space. “Now, Nora, we’re going to let you out to unwrap your eye, don’t do anything fool-” Men screamed like girls as his body was shot with his own gun. My naked body was free, and I’m not staying. I felt every nerve in my body snap. I look around at all of the men with guns pointed at me, and with my mind, I take them away, shooting each of them down, one by one, each one fell. Alarms rang and people were chaotic. The security system had tried to restrain me, but clearly failed. I walked slowly, walking through the large doors. My feet slapped effortlessly on the freezing tile floor. A man was crying in a corner, begging for me to stay away from him. My body was small and fragile. why was he afraid? Oh, that’s right. I made intense eye contact through the steel mask, leaving him in a trance. The man spoke “No” again and again with a weak and trembling voice. He took his own gun, put it in his mouth, and pulled the trigger. I walked away with the sound of dripping blood and brains running off of the walls. I silently walked out of and away from the facility, knowing I was free from wherever I was. Then, I ran, and ran, and ran. And then I woke up.
I sat up in my bed, feeling my head. Not only was it hurting like hell, it was really warm, and tears were streaming down my face. I walk out of my cold room and make my way through the kitchen to the bathroom. “Hey Jay,” I yawn. Jay was a childhood friend of mine. He and I actually were best friends in high school. Now, we go to the same college and share the rent bill because he and I are both poor as hell. “Oh my fucking god Nora how much sleep do you need? We’re gonna fucking be late for class,” Jay jumped around me, trying to get me to laugh. That seems to be a daily goal of his. He doesn’t leave me alone until I laugh, and he knows if I’m faking or not. “Bitch, you better not be fucking ignoring me motherfucker,” Jay also loves the word fuck. “I’m the one that said hey! I’m not ignoring you, you dumb idiot,” I give him a look before brushing my teeth quickly. I turn around and there he is with that stupid look on his face, his snaggle tooth sticking out it a silly kind of way. “What?” I snap, trying to get my coffee. “Dumb Idiot? That’s the best you could come up with?” Jay flailed his arms all over the place. “You sound like a fucking kindergarten kid,” Jay heaves as he laughs. I stare at him to make him uncomfortable. “What time is it?” I break my stare by rolling my eyes and turn the TV on to the news. “Eight thirty-seven,” he chuckles, slurping his coffee annoyingly loud. “Motherfucker we aren’t going to be late!” I chuck the remote at him as he squeals like a pig. “Cornials are getting really popular here,” Jay states out loud, worry fills his voice, showing his rare seriousness. “Yeah,” I turn to the Orlando News. The headline really catches my attention. “Cornials are now attacking the Orlando area, and other surrounding areas,” Somehow, I feel a twist in my stomach. A heavy knot. Jay turns it off. “Hopefully it’s not a problem to either of us. It’s not likely they’ll attack in a popular area anyways,” Jay smiles jokingly, but is still serious.
I get up to finish getting ready for the day. I’m about a semester into the first year of my college education, and Jay is too. In fact, I’m eighteen, and Jay graduated high school at seventeen. With both of us fresh out of high school, it was smart to go directly into college.
“Nora it’s almost nine-thirty!” Jay yelled from the living room. I groan loudly, and Jay shrieks, throwing me the keys to my car. I make sure my skinny jeans look fine and fix my short curly hair. “Bitch you look fine, so lets go!” Jay jokes as he runs to my car, waiting for me to let him in. My car is one giant inside joke that Jay and I made in high school. We promised that when we get our first cars, we’re putting the license plates as “DAT” and “BOI” because it was our favorite meme. So now my black mitsubishi has “BOI” in giant letters on it. I unlock the car, and just so Jay doesn’t complain about my driving music, I put Twenty One Pilots on to keep him happy, and also because he dances like a weirdo. I’m not talking like just weird shoulder movements, I mean like, full on body thrashing, like the first time I met him, I thought he was having a seizure.
Jay’s ridiculous dancing continues until we pull into the parking lot of Orlando State University College. Slowly, we make our way to our class, and my god it’s so boring. Jay just sits there and makes memes, I don’t even know how he manages to pull good grades. However, our classes pass really quickly, and back to back, so before we knew it, it was time to go home already. The car ride was rather long, because someone wanted curly fries for dinner, so I settled for Hardee’s. “Hey Nora, Look,” I look at Jay and lose my composure, because Jay stuck two curly fries up his nose. “You spin me right round, baby, right round!” Jay sang obnoxiously as he spun his head around. “Jay, stop! You’re getting your snot fries everywhere!” I laugh and smack his shoulder as I easily got triggered with him, but in a funny way. I carefully pull into the driveway, and we make our way to our apartment. It was a bit of a long walk, but it’s worth it, because we actually have a rather nice living space for it being an apartment. It didn’t smell like mold, it was nicely painted and furnished, and we even get a nice view of the ocean too in the distance. It wasn’t late yet, so Jay will be hungry again later, even though he says that was dinner; It’s only three P.M., so Jay is likely to want food later. Speaking of, there isn’t much to eat! I better go out and get stuff for dinner!
