Despondent

The recess bell rang sharp at 1 o clock. The class descended into the chaos of a fish market as the teacher took leave.Everyone took out their lunchbox and sat with their respective friends.Soon some of them will go out to play cricket, football or lock and key. While the others will uncover the latest gossips in school, discuss the new hot transfer student or rant about the annoying math teacher with their friends.Even the scorching heat of the May sun could not stop these vigorous youths..

Amidst the bustling students,a particular girl stood out like a sore thumb.Unlike the other students, she did not go out to play nor did she chat with anyone. She sat on the last bench alone eating her lunch. After finishing her lunch, she went to the washroom.None of the students in the class noticed her going out.It was as if she was invisible, she had no existence in this class.

On her way to the washroom,Nisha noticed a giggle of girls gossiping about the school hunk and the new transfer student.Students were being pushed to their crushes by their friends, eliciting a crackle of unbridled laughter from their friends. Two boys were kneeling down in front of their classroom with red ears.Their classmates were teasing them which angered them even further.A catfight was going on between two girls who liked the same boy. The onlookers cheered them on adding fuel to the fight.

Seeing the gleeful ambience at school,Nisha's loneliness shined even more. She was a misfit to the joyous students.Nisha could not fathom how people could make friends so easily and laugh so carefreely. But how would she understand? She smiled bitterly.A abnormal person like her could not understand a pure thing like friendship. Recalling how her classmates always called her the "witch," Nisha's eyes started to water. Hiding her tears, Nisha quickly escaped into the washroom and washed her face along with her hands.

She looked into her face in the mirror. It was unremarkable, not ugly but neither pretty.Medium sized eyes with short eyelashes, fleshy nose and thin lips, just your run-of-the-mill Indian girl. She wondered why she didn't have long eyelashes like Priya, a curvy body like Drishti or a funny personality like Krutika. She didn't have a good personality nor was she beautiful or intelligent. She was the true definition of a "good for nothing". Would not it be great if she disappeared? Just a clean cut at the wrist would end it all. Her hands unconsciously found their way towards the broken glass of the window beside the cubicle door. Suddenly......
