Chapter 1

Luhlas

I sigh as I stare out the window, admiring the stars as we fly through space aimlessly. I lean my head against the window and watch as one of the planets draws closer.

I feel the ship speed up and turn to Rolgels in a panic.

He simply smiles at me and our ship rocks as we crash through the ozone layer, spiraling into a wide field.

I brace myself and the ship folds on impact.

I uncover my head and turn to Rolgels, who smiled at me. His lavender skin was turned to a violet as he blushes.

“Were you trying to kill us?” I ask, and Rolgels laughs.

“No, I promise. I decided to take us exploring.”

“Here?” I groan and lean back in my seat. Rolgels and I had been alone forever, we were only sixteen, and we have not once left our fly-through-space safety. “It isn’t safe.” I decide, looking out my cracked window.

“Okay?” Rolgels smiles, and it lights up his green eyes. “Let’s go!” He fumbles with his seat belt and opens the door, stepping outside into this foreign place.

Rolgels

I breathe in the fresh air. Luhlas steps out of the ship cautiously, looking from side to side. She peers across the tall, gold, fuzzy beams that swayed around us.

I turn to her, her blue hair also swaying. I wonder how that’s even possible. Her blue eyes meet mine, and I smile. “Not so bad, isn’t it?”

She narrows her eyes and rubs her baby blue arms.

Something is blowing on my skin, too, and it’s chilly.

“Of course it is! We need to go back to space. Besides, I’m cold.”

I roll my eyes and begin trampling through the gold beams. Luhlas sighs and I hear her following me.

We eventually come across long-stretched black ribbon, that stretches from left to right, and back again. I see two bright lights barreling towards us.

I jump onto the ribbon and start waving my arms around. Luhlas hiss for me to get back but the lights stop in front of me. It’s a spaceship with wheels.

A voice calls out, “Hey! You kids need a ride?”

I nod and Luhlas reluctantly climbs into the spaceship with me. The alien driving was old, with saggy peach colored skin. He asks us weird questions, like where we go to school. What even is that? Luhlas just answered with, “We’d rather not talk about ourselves.”

Luhlas

We climb out of the truck, outside of a building labeled “Hotel”. I lead Rolgels up the building and we climb in through an open window.

Rolgels flops onto a fluffy white square and I sit in a chair. “Rolgels, we need to leave, soon.”

Rolgels sits up and smiles. “Nah, I want to find out what school is.”

“Really?” I groan. He’s too adventurous for his own good.

“Uh, yeah. We might meet more aliens!”

“This isn’t where we’re from! We come from Mars! These beings aren’t aliens!”

I sigh and look through the room, finding a black foldable object. I open it and see foreign symbols drawn on little squares on one half, the other half lights up. I gingerly touch the lit up half.

Nothing happens.

I click a button and a message pops up. Curious, I ask, “What is a school?”

A bunch of results pop up, flashing the screen. I sign up for a school, and see the kids go back tomorrow, since it’s Monday, for this weekend, and are off for a Spring Break.

Rolgels

“What?” I cry. Luhlas signed us up for school?

“You wanted to know, so I signed us up to learn.” Luhlas storms away.

I sit up and follow Luhlas out the window, where she leads us to a building. A loud sound scares me, and we enter the building.

We’re greeted by two aliens, a blonde one and a boy.

“Hi,” The blonde one smiles. “I’m Emma, and this is Liam, we can show you around the school, if you’d like?”

Luhlas and I wave shyly and nod.

“I’m Luhlas, and this is Rolgels,” Luhlas introduced us.

We follow the two aliens around the school. I half listen as Emma points out the classrooms and describes the teacher’s personalities. Teachers are the adult aliens who teach the class.

Eventually, Emma leads us into a classroom, where a teacher was talking to the class. All of the aliens were sitting at funny shaped things with sticks on them,

Emma shows us two empty chairs, and Luhlas and I sit.

Luhlas

All eyes were on Rolgels and me. Even the teacher’s.

“Well, guys,” The teacher smiles.

“What are guys?” Rolgels whispers to me.

I shrug in response.

“Would you kids like to come introduce yourselves to the class?”

“Not really,” Rolgels mumbles.

I go to the front of the class and turn to face them. “I’m Luhlas and my friend is Rolgels, and we came here because,” I freeze, looking at the teacher. “We, uh, we had to.” I sit back down to the sound of kids struggling to breathe.

Rolgels is looking at me in awe, and I raise my eyebrows at him.

“Okay, class, does anyone have any questions for Luhlas and Rolgels?” The teacher scans the room.

Someone’s hand shoots up and my heart beats faster.

“Jake?”

“Why are they blue and purple?” he snorts, and everyone else laughs. I blush.

“Why does your shirt hug your back so tight?” Rolgels asks, and everyone howls with laughter.

Rolgels

I smile as the class laughs. The teacher settles everyone down, and Jake glares at me.

I return the stare.

Class finally ends, and Luhlas and I make our way through the crowded hallways. Emma and Liam approach us quickly.

“Are you guys going to the Spring Fling Dance?” Emma asks. I see Liam holding her hand behind her back and stare at their entwined fingers.

“I don’t know,” Luhlas answers.

Liam speaks for the first time since I’ve know him. “Emma, speaking of the dance, would you like to go with me? As my date?”

Emma nods, wide-eyed.

“What’s a date?” Luhlas asks me.

I shrug.

“Well, we’ll go to this,” Luhlas pauses. “dance of yours.”

Our week of school flies by, and soon we’re standing outside the school with Emma and Liam. Emma was wearing a dress with roses on it, and Liam wore a suit.

We enter the building, where people jumped and moved as if they were being electrocuted. Lights flashed and everyone was moving in some way.
