The Beginning
An unnamed rural place in Mexico, 1570.
A body of a woman and her two children has been found near the lake. It seems they have drowned.
The locals already knew the lady Maria, the wife of the rich conquistador.
The conquistador is not a faithful person and is known for being cruel to Maria and the children.
He is currently away for an official task, but locals think he is with his mistress, Victoria.
The news of Maria had already been sent to him, and he already has shaken his hands off the responsibility.
His employee has completed the burial proceedings, but only for his namesake. Very few people attended it, most of them are either afraid of Maria’s husband or hate him.
After the ceremony was over, people attended to their daily routine. In the evening, some of them were discussing the incident.
One of Maria’s friends, Angela, said, ” It’s all his fault. If he remained faithful to her, then, she wouldn’t have drowned herself and her kids. She was depressed and melancholic, and she expressed her desire to kill herself many times. Oh, why didn’t I support and take care of her more?!“.
Matilda said, “Did she drown herself, though? Even if she did, would she drown her children? I thought she loved her children.”
Angela: “She did, maybe that’s why she killed them. Maybe she could not bear to depart from them or think about what would happen to them in her absence. What are you saying?”
Matilda: “That’s certainly a possibility, but I think there’s foul play involved. I think her husband has put her to it or hired people to kill them. I don’t think he would directly do anything because that would raise suspicion.”
John, another estate worker, was sitting there, silently reading a book, but listening to every word. He said, ” I agree with Matilda, but it’s in our best interest to not discuss the matter. We could not do anything when she was alive, and we cannot do anything now against her rich husband. ”
Angela: “but”
John: “Remember, even walls have ears; we cannot go discussing this anymore.”
Matilda: “Yes, he is right; we cannot do anything except mourn and remember her. But saying anything against him, even in private, can lead to grave consequences. We don’t have any power or position over him. Let’s just pray that he faces the repercussions very soon.”
And that was the end of the discussion. The conquistador married again within a month and was enjoying his life. People were forbidden to mention Maria, but they mourned her in private.
Though people slowly started to forget about her, because life goes on.
Until one day, the day, when vengeance would strike again. A storm is brewing, and it’s going to destroy everyone.
