Chapter 1
“Ladies and gentlemen, welcome on board train 776 from Almera to Euria. We are expected to be in Euria in approximately seven hours. Please, enjoy your trip.” There goes the announcement for our last tour in Euria. Now that the train is moving, our lives lie down in the hands of Deon.
Heavy rain was raging outside, hitting the windows of the train as Kian leaned on the wall, looking outside. His light green eyes wandered on the dark sky when the lightning was flashing behind the clouds. He could hear how the soldiers whined for the bad weather, well we can’t blame them, no one wanted to fight in this kind of weather, no one wanted to fight at all. Fuck the Luanians, those arrogant bastards. Why couldn’t they just ask help, why start a whole war just to get better conditions to live. Sure there would be some other way to change that. There were so many negative traits in war, why would anyone even consider starting one. Women and children, who can’t protect themselves. Running for their lives, leaving their home behind, those who can do it. So much death and blood around for something we don’t even know if it exists, at least that was what Kian was thinking of.
This war has been raging over ten years and no end is showing. For ages Euria and Almera have been able to live in harmony with nature and its creations and each other. Sure it’s understandable why Luanians are so jealous, but our lands have done everything we could to help them, but we cannot accept the requirements that would destroy our land. And Eurians can’t share something they have no idea what it even is. This whole war is based on a very old legend, how did it go again…
“Once upon a time, there wasn’t lands or borders, Euria, Almera and Luan were just one big land. There were no rulers, kings or queens, just civilians with their leaders, healers and town elders under the same sun and moon. The legend says that the land stayed so nutritious because of the goddess Deon. The goddess of sun and moon, rain and cloudy days, nutritious land and fertility. Without her there would be no land to live, without her everything would dry away, animals and forests would die away, water would stop running, life would stop. As the people around the land started to get greedy of the powers of the goddess, she decided to punish them. She dispersed them into three groups, Luanians, Almerians and Eurians. Luanians she sent to the worst part of the land, leaving them on their own. Almerians she sent to the other side of the land, giving them just enough of her powers to get going. She left the Eurians in the middle, continuing to give her powers to the land as the Eurians never wanted more than they were given. In order to avoid the conflict again, she hid herself under the ground, where no one could find her.”
And no one bothered to look for her, until now. Kian didn’t think that the goddess’ decision was right, she should’ve given Luanians even a little bit of her powers, it’s not fair that they had to fight diseases and hunger all the time. It’s such a shame, but here we are… Train full of Almera’s soldiers going towards the war zone in the middle of Euria. Kian’s eyes started to get loopy as he got tired of looking at the rain. He raised himself from the wall, looking around the train to see that everything was alright before he crossed his arms, leaned back to the seat and closed his eyes. As the rain rustled against the roof and the wall of the train, it made falling asleep easier.
“Ladies and gentlemen, we’re arriving at Euria’s capital city, trainstation of Sarton. Local time is currently 04.55 am and the temperature is currently +10 celsius. I’d like to thank you for joining us on this trip and we are looking forward to seeing you on board again in the near future. Have a nice night.”
Kian opened his eyes when he heard the announcement of their arrival to Euria. He took a deep breath as he looked back outside, it seemed the rain had eased up a little and the sky was cracking from the heavy clouds. The ground sure was going to be wet for a while, which would make his task even harder. When the train started to slow down, Kian once more made sure he had everything he needed in his backpack. He lifted his jacket off the wall and put it on and right after he moved the backpack on to his back, adjusting the straps right. He took a better position to sit for the last few minutes before they would stop.
“Hey Kian, where are you heading from here?” Kian heard a voice behind him. He turned to look in that direction, just to see a man he used to train with back in Almera. “To the south. I’m going to Sutton to see what is going on there.” Kian answered to the soldier. “I hope you aren’t going alone? With the latest information we got, only two came back from there and they sent four teams. It seems that their tactical base is located in Sutton…” Man states out to Kian with a worried tone in his voice. Kian moved his short black hair out of his face as he looked this young looking man into his blue eyes without any expression. “Don’t worry about me, I’ll be just fine. I’m not a team member, I like to work alone so no one is in my way.” Kian said as he stood up. “If I was you, I would head up to the Eastern part of Euria. It’s the safest for now.”
Kian once more looked towards the young man as he placed his cap on his head “Good luck Milo.” He said before he left the train and Milo behind him. Drawing the cap lower, looking at the ground, Kian took the path towards the south. Water splashing under his boots and light rain wetting his clothing, he lit a cigarette as Milo stayed behind at the station looking after Kian, a strong hope in his mind, hoping he would come back alive and they could see each other once again, Since Kian was his only friend. At least that is what Milo thought of Kian.
