Chapter 1 - Waking Up

Sitting upright in bed after being woken by a strange dream, Alex puts her hand to the left side of their bed. Without looking over, the side is cold and empty. But Alex already knew this; like yesterday morning, it was the same. Void of her husband.

Startled by knocking at her apartments front door, Alex swings her legs out of the covers and over the king size bed, bare legs dangling over the sides. Her head heavy, she ruffles her bedhead whilst attempting to try and wake herself up. Getting up slowly, front door knocking, Alex gathers the pile of clothes next to the bed, usually concerned about what and who saw what she was wearing, she realises she could care less what anyone thought about her new and didorgsnised concept of whet to wear when.

"Jesus Christ I'm coming", she shouts out as she pulls over the grey hoodie from the bedroom floor. Making her way down the hallway, she eventually makes it to the front door and opens it, reluctantly.

"Sorry, I was aslee-", Alex cuts off as she realises who is on her front porch. Again. Feeling agitated, Alex wondered to herself if this was going to be an on-going 'thing' - daily-fucking-welfare-checks. Last time she checked, she wasn't the fucking criminal.

"Hi Alexandra, sorry but the Sheriff has made daily checks, well, daily", constable Lewis, clearly uncomfortable, says as Alex wipes her face. Eager to get back to bed, Alex smiles and reassures the young constable that she had suspected that.

"You have a job to do, I get it", she says again, still smiling weakly. Attenpting to diffuse the awkwardness between them, Alex half spins around pointing around her apartment, offering for Constable Lewis to come in and check the apartment, like her head, it was full of mess and clutter.

"Er, I appreciate that, however as long as you're up and answering your door, my job is done", he says, as if this was the best part of a shitty situation. As Alex feels the conversation is at its end, Lewis asks tentively if Alex had supports and family close by.

"My dad is on his way down fron the country. I suspect he will be staying a few days, do 'dad' stuff", Alex attempts a small laugh.

"Great. Well, if you feel like you need any further support or -", Alex cuts him off. "Really, I'm fine. Once my father arrives, he will be doing his own welfare checks, I'm sure", Alex says, waiting for this conversation to just be over.

"Perhaps we will compare notes when we meet", Lewis chuckles to himself. Alex now desperate to shut down the dad-jokes and awkward pauses, starts to slowly close her front door. Before she does, she feels the question rise up and out of her mouth before she had time to mute it.

"Um, Constable...is he okay? Alex asks, embarrassed by her blatant lack of self-control. Trying to fight back hot, roaring tears that had come from nowhere, Alex feels a heavy sigg leave her lungs.

"I'm really sorry, I can't -", Lewis puts his head down.

Apologising furiously, Alex attempts to wave her question away.

"It's a court matter now, even if i knew..." he trailed off.
