Chapter 1

The Masons were the perfect family, it was in their genes. A lovely mother Clarice, a strong father Mark and three handsome sons Landon, Charles and Levi. Landon was sixteen, Charles was fourteen and Levi was eight. Every hair on each of the boys’ heads was perfect in every way and girls swooned over them like they were pure gold. The sun was nothing compared to them. Clarice and Mark had been high school sweethearts and the perfect couple, so by the time they both were 20, they were hitched. They were a very happy and lovely family. Clarice would always have flour all over her clothes because she was baking any chance she got or she would be tending to the flowers in the garden. Mark was a hard working man and was in the military as was seen properly serving his country and helping the effort against , it was the 40’s after all and they weren’t going to let Hitler win. Sure their mother had a hard time by herself without Mark but they boys were a great help. All of the sons were outstanding students and star athletes to the delight of their parents. Even though they seemed perfect they were far from it.

It had all started when Levi would wake up in a cold sweat in the middle of the night. His throat would be hoarse and his beautiful eyes were welled up with tears. He had started refusing to talk. His drawings that used to be knights and lovely horses with long manes were now shadow demons with scathing orange eyes. All of the Masons were worried out of their minds, it seemed so. What was happening to their baby boy.

“Mummy?” Asked Charles

“What is it dear?” responded Clarice in a patient tone.

“What is going on with Levi, why is he acting like that? I’m afraid.” Charles sounded slightly hysterical.

“Oh it’s the nightmares dear, the kids around town are sharing all that rubbish and you know how imaginative Levi can be.” Clarice had turned around and for a second Charles had seen a glint of orange in her lovely thunderstorm eyes.

“ I guess.” Charles said as his curios mind raced on the change of eye color

“ Run along, you’re going to be late for school.” While Clarice had said this Levi had walked downstairs his eyes were bloodshot but that was a normal sight for the family.

“Have you been crying again?” Clarice had questioned little Levi. In response Levi curtly nodded before holding his mother like his life depended on it. “ Oh dear, baby they aren’t real they won’t come get you. I’m here aren’t I, and your father is coming back tomorrow to stay for a while, now isn’t that swell.” Levi didn’t respond but rather gripped his mother harder. “Well, I will call in and let your teacher know that you aren’t feeling well.”
